Hey Blythe, Why don't you and the better half descend on Discosteve for a month or two until you find somewhere suitable? He'd surely have a bit of room or a couch somewhere??

Seriously, My Mother and Stepfather live in Kambah, if you need to ask some Q's I'm sure they could help.

There are lots of good areas around there. It depends on how far out of Canberra you would like to be and what the financial situaton is. I think some of the best rural areas in NSW are surrounding Canberra and within 1.5 hours easy drive.

after 28 years in the territory, I guess how far from Canberra is one of those questions of what is considered an acceptable time or distance to comute every day to and from work.

I want to go rural as the thought of living in a city just doesnt do it for me, I suspect I have been spoilt living up here in that regard.

Only comment I can make is that my son lives in Yass and works in Canberra without any problems. There is quite a large area round Canberra in all directions where rural living is quite feasible, and the opportunities compared to the size of Canberra would be better and cheaper than most Australian cities, although probably expensive an with long travel times compared to Darwin.

I live in Canberra - you will be unlikely to get a rural site within the ACT as it is all short term lease.

To the north you have Yass and Murrembateman (lots of hobby farms - Disco Steve can tell you more) - a bit to the east of there you have Sutton and Gundaroo - both expensive - NE of Canberra is Womboin - again a bit expensive - east is Bungandore and closer in Queanbeyan but with the new Defence HQ being completed both will be expensive - south of Queanbeyan is Burra - a bit out of the way - south is Royalla - mainly hobby farms.

There is nothing to the west as it is all National Park.

I live about 45k's out of Canberra CBD - 35mins drive

Have a look at www.allhomes.com.au. This site will give you an idea of what is around and what prices are.

Happy to chat if you want to PM. I looked around all borders of the ACT for about 4-5 months when I bought my place in 2003!

Suppose it comes down a bit to what part of the ACt you are going to be working in, developed or vacant land and price!

Theres plenty of good rural areas around Yass, from your 5 acre blocks up to couple hundred acres. I've travelled from Yass to Canberra for work for 10 years now. Don't find it a problem. Yass is quite a bit cheaper than closer to Canberra also.

Forgot to ask, does your name 'Blitz" mean you have one??? If so Yass is the Blitz capital of the world. Also, what line of work are you moving down for?
