Freighting vehicle from melb to Cairns or visa versa

Has anyone freighted their vehicle from Melbourne to Cairns or back?

I am looking at doing this at least one way for a Cape York trip we plan to do this year. My main problem is that most of the major freight companies wont take your vehicle loaded with camping gear.

We might have 3-4 vehicles needing to go from Melbourne and possibly another couple from Sydney.

If anyone has any names I can try it would be great.

    thanks,

I rang about 20 frieght companies a couple of years ago with the same idea except I wanted to get the vehicle to Darwin. Apparently the problem is one of responsibility as the vehicles have to be transported unlocked so that they can be accessed for rolling on and off. The same applied to rail freight....vehicles must be empty.
Good luck mate, if you find a solution I'll be right onto it.

    G'day,
Last year we did a trip from Geelong Vic to Darwin. We did the trip one way, then flew home. We had Trewin Logistics bring my County back from Darwin to Melbourne for $1250 Trewin Logistics - Australia's best logistics company for specialized and over-sized freight!
We were quoted up to $3800 with others.
$1250 still sounds a lot, but considering the fuel alone to drive home would've cost that much, as well as wear and tear on the car, and another week off, it worked out ok.
A friend put me on to Trewin because they specialise in carting things like caravans, and they didn't mind the County having a roof top tent on it, as well as personal stuff left in the car (although they take no responsibility for personal items)
Although I've only used them once, I was happy with the service. The County was back in Melb in 4 days with no hassles.
They will give you a free online quote >>>>>>>Trewin Logistics - Australia's best logistics company for specialized and over-sized freight! From memory, the online quote we got was fairly accurate.
Freight was much more expensive from Melb heading north than coming back to Melb. A mate was gunna freight his County to Cairns last year, but it was too expensive.

    Cheers, Murray

I gather that if you want a vehicle freighted one way, considerably cheaper rates should be available to Melbourne from interstate than vica versa. Especially with car carriers. Due to the concentration of assembly plants in Victoria a lot more cars are transported from than to Melbourne. Car carriers are somewhat more limited than general freight carriers in what they can take as backloads. As the mileage cost of running trucks is generally similar whether they are loaded or not, it is often preferable for operators to take on backloads for relatively cheap prices rather than return without a payload.

However, the likelihood of returning empty is probably factored into the going cartage rates for transporting cars interstate from Victoria.

Thanks Murray, I will check it out. $1250 is a great price. I think I would be happy to drive myself to Cairns if I can get the car freighted back.

We freighted one way from Darwin to Adelaide about 4 years ago and left everything in the vehicle. Well, we took out our cameras but that was all.

We flew home so could not unload even if we wanted to.

The vehicle was supposedly kept locked while on the truck. Driver presumably kept the keys in the cab. There was no problems with all the camping gear left in the vehicle, although we had to empty the gas bottle. Actually, I seem to remember that they did not like the gas bottle, even though it was empty. Sweet talked our way around that one I think.
