Seeing as the leak has just come back, where is the leak coming from?
And are your breathers blocked on the TC etc?????
Hi all,
yesterday i took off the transfer case bottom plate as it was leaking cleaned up both faces used non loctite gasket let it sit stuck it back in and did the bolts to the torque in the manual .....great on the way to work sat in the car park all day not a drop ...got home its pumping good .....should i go back to the drawing board and use loctite/ hymol sealer or leave it and think i am being environmentally friendly putting oil back in the ground or even try and nip up the set screws ?
second was the rear dif pan (replaced dif pan, has cork gasket and some plastic gaskit) it was over tightened on the bung and had enough gunk around it, that i believe it was the only thing holding the bung in!
it had a slight leak at the bottom of the dif too, this has re-visited me also
any input to save me getting butchered by the missus would be appreciated, i know it's a land rover thing but would be good to be different cheers

leak on the dif is at the bottom
leak on the transfer case is the forward 3-4 nuts so towards the engine
Common.... It comes down the threads and out between the bolt and plate...
I fitted bonded washers to mine (Dowty Seals) between the bolt and plate.
This cured my issue.
Diff is a matter of pulling the axles... Remove, clean and use a decent sealant (pay attention around the bolts) and refit and torque...
I ran no gaskets on my Diff, just sealant.... Never had a leak after doing that.
drop the oil out ,remove the offending nuts, clean up the oil and generously apply loctite 567 to them before refitting

dave are you an advocate off losing the cork gasket on the rear diff it didn't have one factory fitted ?
Tombie with reference to the washers if i am correct the land rover own manual refers to spring wshers between the bolt and plate interesting they were not on it upon removal ?
and can you get loctite sealer easily within Australia or do i have to get it from the u.k.
certainly seems to come from the set screws rather than anywhere else and it was suppossed to have been overhauled just before i bought it, i may ring the previous owner to verify that the ....wits did the job
Transfer case leak is likely to be the o ring on the intermediate shaft. It leaks out and runs down, appearing to come out of the bottom plate.
now dave dont gloat ....you were right in your thirty second aprasial the crown pinion when its buggered it leaks to the prop side right ?
as that oil is what is leaking down the salisbury and under the diff i noticed it when having a painting by numbers session on the chassis the other day.
its gotta go over the pits next week to get registered in W.A. would i scrap through if i got handy with a rag before going in you think ?
as for the transfer bottom plate if it is the o'ring on the intermediate shaft i am hacked off that was supossed to have been done by rovertech before i bought it bloody sharks
