Interesting and I agree with Baz...

I drove the disco around monitoring the engine coolant temp the other day.

In 46c heat after driving 20 minutes the coolant temp was only 55c...

Idling from cold the engine took over 30 minutes to start to nudge that temp when I tested it later.

Several others have commented that the TD5 doesnt warm up as much as the V8 or other brands of 4wd

We have an on-demand LPG hot water unit bought off evil-bay, connect the LPG hose, drop a 12v pump into your jerry or drum of water, takes longer to set-up the shower tent.

When the water flows the pilot light starts the heater automatically, there is a gas flow control, water control as well as a summer/winter setting.

We shall be installing some quick connects in our sailboat connecting up to a transom shower, when camping a couple of hooks over the bullbar next to a shower tent.

one under the bonnet of the 300Tdi Disco....the other hanging in our shed from a Paj..........


we now use a 12volt shower..billy boiled hot water..and a bucket of cold water works much better IMHO..


unless we take the camper and we have a 14ltr gas fired hot water system built in:D

I managed to get a stainless steel heat exchanger that was rectangular and about the size of a brick on ebay (about $100). It has 20 S/S layers only1mm apart or so to exchange the heat. I mounted it under the plastic cover on the RHS guard (behind the overflow tank on a 300Tdi Defender. I guess the TD5 should also have a vacant spot there (unless you've got a Disco). I took water from the heater hoses.

Concerend about the increased risk of damage due to coolant loss, I always carry spare T-Pieces for the hoses and have fitted a a low coolant alarm (float switch) to the expansion tank, so that I get a very early warning of any coolant loss.

Yes it will work on a 300Tdi, the TD5 is very different, for coolent flow in a TD5 the engine needs to be revving at over 1500rpm, it will not heat sufficiant enough at idle for the water to be heated enough to have a shower.
