I will happily admit that I'm no expert of most things mechanical - although Landy ownership is progressively sorting that out :angel:. Yeah, the brass plug is good. I wouldn't worry too much about a little bit of smoke on start up, thats pretty normal for any diesel, when I got mine it was always a bit more smokey than I liked, so I religiously run a product called Chemtec DieselPower through the system - mixes in with the fuel, it claims to keep the injectors clean and other things and since using it smoke has been significantly reduced. But no doubt others will soon reply and let you know some other possible reasons!

How many km's has she got on her? Has she got a good service history etc?

ok well i'm abit more calmer now lol, she has just under 330,000k's but with a great service history. will give her a once over in a few weeks once i get some funds in my skyrocket!! can i ask, what sort of oil, coolant and other fluids you use, like i said to someone else i'm totally new to the diesel engine.

Engine oil : 15W/40 - I use Penrite HPR and have never had a problem.

Coolant : Used to be 50/50 mix Ethylene Glycol (green) but since head gasket blew it has Organic Acid Technology (OAT) coolant which is red. I'd stick with normal E-Glycol, its more available and can be topped up with water much more happily.

Manual trans, PAS, (or Auto trans) : Penrite Auto trans fluid type D

Transfer box : Hypoid gear oil 80W/90 (I think, not 100% sure)

Front and rear axles : 80W/90 gear oil

Lithium based grease in the grease nipples along the prop shafts etc

Brake and clutch : Dot4 brake fluid, just make sure its from a sealed container. I just replaced all mine since I had no idea when they were last done, very simple job.

WoW thanks for the info, that will come in handy very much. had a look earlier in the coolant resi and it had red coolant in it, should i stick with it cause i was going to drain the rad's tomoz and just put the green in it????

so i take it you have a d1 as well???

I'd prefer the ethylene glycol (usually green) if you do change over, it is very important you very very thoroughly flush it out I have been told. To make it more complicated some E-Gly based ones are red, and I don't really know any way of being sure one way or the other. Either way though, just make sure you give it a very good flush, I'd suggest using a commercial flushing product, as well as a few goes through with water and you shouldn't have any dramas either way.

Yeah, i have a 96 D1 300tdi SE. Its a continual love hate relationship at the moment!

good to hear about kevin, ummm not too sure, main prob's started after the otways trip, and i'm sure it did more damage on that incline, when she over heated. but look i had fun with her, just it was a real pain in the ass with the susp, airbags, not able to find acc for her. but NOW look out :firedevil::firedevil::firedevil: lol.
