Which is precisely the point... Once the other communities start to get involved, you'll get the other view points represented. Until then, you've got one side trying to impose their views on others and there's always going to be that resentment.

The ultimate result of this is the situation in Kosovo. Kosovo historically was part of Serbia, populated by Serbs almost exclusively. Since WWII there have been large influxes of ethnic Albanians, mostly illegal immigrants, and a large natural increase in their numbers to the point they outnumbered the Serbs. The Serbs, and everyone one else in the Balkans, greatly dislike Albanians who they regard as a criminal population. Feeling threatened the Serbs started to use their army to force ethnic Albanians back into Albania, and to kill those who resisted. The end result was that NATO sided with the Albanians and assisted in an Albanian takeover of Kosovo. This is a situation with a smouldering fuse which will explode again in the future as the Serbs still regard Kosovo as part of their heartland. NATO's actions are greatly resented by Serbs and much murder remains to be done here.
Coincidentally, I am reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography at the moment.
The Apartheid laws instituted by the Afrikaaner government were mind boggling.
Black Africans had to have a pass at all times, they could not own land in white areas, Blacks were prohibited from marrying whites or coloureds. And it goes on. They could not travel on white buses or trains or swim in white swimming pools. They had separate hospitals and a separate school system. Guess which one was inferior.
One point nearly everyone seems to miss, is that there are few racially based laws in Australia.
Although I guess that one could argue that the intervention in NT is a racially based law, in that it applies only to Aboriginals. Reading Mandela's book however I somehow think given a choice an aboriginal would still rather live in Australia than Seth efrica.
In the main however all races are treated equally under the law.
This is not the case in many countries.
Thailand -No foreigner allowed to own land even if married to a Thai.
Malaysia-positive discrimination in jobs, education for Malays vs Indians or Chinese.
India -Caste system which entrenches "aristocracy". Quotas for school entrance based on caste.
and so on.

sorry that is bollocks and for the stretch of my qualifications in Perth was oysters and chips, as for the local terms angle chips is chips it isn't pomme pont neuf is it ?
i am a city and guilds qualified chef 3 years at college 5 year apprenticeship in london, and at the time head chef of an exclusive restaurant in cambridgeshire, i at the time was proficiant in classic / modern french, spanish , thai, and english type gruel that passes for food, yet i was allowed to cook crap like chips and shuck oysters seems that chips are the main stay .so if i split with some shiela up to cairns it would make no odds as a kid could knock out what was asked of me.
what a waste but, there are the times where a qualified 'backpacker' might love the job he is doing and approach the boss to take him on which has happened
I don't see Australias as being Racist , I recall having a conversation with someone a while back about my origin and as an Australian Ethnic I have had very positive experiences from my Aussie friends , besides being called a " Terrorist " I get along very well with them . personally it's how one is seen portraying them selves in front of others , If you feel your're being subjected to Racism then you may have given yourself some false pretence that you are , but in actual fact your really not.
I hope that makes sense...
Many Australian employers are suspicious of foreign qualifications & experience having been deceived and/or hurt by falsehoods, misrepresentation, "Tradesman's Rights" Certificates issued on the basis of lies, perception that foreign training is not up to standard, and downright incompetents with overseas issued paper. In my time in the Australian motor manufacturing industry, we cynically said that no pommie job applicant had ever been less than a foreman in the old country by their own account. We wondered who did all the work over there if everyone was a foreman or works foreman.
don't know about oz but foreman still work in the uk :p
Nowhere in your original post did you mention that you were a chef. A good chef is in demand everywhere, however what I said about backpackers in other industries is true, unless of course you are in the fruit picking industry.
We have employed backpackers in our business when we ran a wholesale frozen food distribution business. You you would train them up, getting them NSW Heavy Rigid drivers licences because their international licence isn't recognised for full-time employment, teach them the runs and the customers. Then right on the busiest time of the year, they'd decide that they had to go off somewhere travelling. Several times it was by telephone after they had already left and we had customers screaming for their delivery. Another friend has a steel fabrication company, would trial foreign welders who supposedly had the correct welding certification, but when they're welds were checked they did not meet the necessary standard for the Australian certification.
Your answer was bollocks for most industries outside the catering industry.

They actually 'phoned to tell you!!!! Most are not that considerate. Just never seen or heard of again, after payday. Kiwis and pommies were the worst offenders. Dutch and Scandinavians seemed to have been taught responsibility and manners.
As to 457 visa welders, I have heard horror stories from several employers about these. Some could not weld to the standard expected of a late first year apprentice boilermaker, and alleged machinists who could not properly sharpen a single point tool and took 20 minutes to set up a simple job in a four jaw chuck.
