If I recall my long-ago studies correctly, English is one of the North Germanic group of languages. As well as English this group includes German, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian (all three), Friesian/Frasch, Faroese, Icelandic, Dutch, Flemish, and Lowland Scots if this can be considered a separate language. Lowland Scots has a lot of words in common with Danish, no doubt reflecting the civilising influence of missions from my Viking forebears to that country.Quote:
