You have a bargain!! I was shopping for a Defe at that time as well and the 1996 to 1998 Defes were selling for about $ 18000 and lasted on the paper only a week.
Only the ones in remote areas lasted longer.
We bought a Defender about 2 months ago. It is a 99 300TDi one of the last in Green. Has twin Batties, twin tanks, Warn 10,000 winch , bull bar, Snorkle, full length roof rack, UHF radio, outback rear draws, child restrant bar, and full tint alround
It has been well looked after and was an inland car so seen no beach work and is mint inside, and pretty much mint outside. Had alot of stuff replaced before we owned it (by the last owner).
We paid $16,500 for it and i thought that was a bargin. But took us along time to find a defender . We were looking at an early TD5 but when we saw this with all the bits on that i would want to put on one i bought it .
But as for the red book , we had one in the uk call the Parkers. They used to do the same thing , that they under priced 110 and 90's by huge amounts. I had a mate who phoned them up to check that they had a mint 90 was worth £5000 and you could not find one on the street in any condition for £10,000. They said they were right so he told them to go and find him some and he will have 5 of them at that price and give them £1000 finders fee. As he could go and sell them for £10,000 each the next day . They put the phone down on him![]()

I've been looking at some fender prices and see it as 2 fold. One is that some sellers are dreamers...the price they are asking on 8-10+ yr old fenders is ridiculous. The other side of the problem is if you get people inane enough to buy them at such a high price....it becomes a never ending circle. At the moment it is a buyers market...not a sellers....so screw them down and get a fair and reasonable price,

I don't really think it is a buyer market with defenders, as already said they are selling pretty quickly as it is, D2's on the other hand are the other way round. Saw a mint oslo blue D2 V8 2001 with all the toys for $9000 in a dealer, cheap car .I bought my110 from a dealer in Brisbane and he had a chap from perth and one from Melbourne coming to have a look that week. And i don't belive that was a line .
But there are some people who are asking for dreaming money. There is a place in Brisbane that sells a few disco's and defenders and they ask really silly money for them . But they seem to be turning the stock quite regulary so some idiots must be buying them from them .

Dunno what Defenders you guys are shopping for. The internet sites I just looked at have ten or so at under $16k. Mine's been up for sale since the beginning of December with very sporadic interest.
Maybe it's a NSW thing.

In Qld I lost 3 Defenders in December including a 130 within a week.
I found the 1994 just out of the blue.
I was chasing a Defender 196/98 with less than 200000 km and they go before I can have my cash in the pocket
Where are you placing your ads?
In the Trading Pots was only one 1998 Defe 130 here in Bundaberg for 18.900 and was sold in 4 days. I was prepared to buy it.
Hey Reads...I was referring to a buyers market in general. Ive seen somewhere recently a 98 Fender TDI for $21k....thats dreaming.
Take this into consideration....assuming you could find funding for an 11yr old vehicle.....as person is unlikely to be paying cash...and if they are, they need their head read. Rate will be high and term likely to be short.
Forgetting that.....I worked rough repayments would be around $493 p.m over 60 mths for the above 11 yr old vehicle.
Compare to a new/ demo fender at around $48k with a 35% R.V over same 60 mths....repayments of around $721 p.m.
So the difference between an 11yr old vehicle with probably 150-200 thousand kms on it....versus a vehicle with 5000kms on it...plus warranty is $50 per week...give or take a cent.
Whether one likes it or not...redbook is a guideline...it is how many insurers and funders will value a vehicle....for this vehicle the following:
Private Price Guide$8,200 - $9,900 * Trade In Price Guide$4,900 - $6,600 * Average Km165,000 - 275,000 * Price When New (RRP)$39,990
See dreamin,

When I was selling a 2003 Td5 2 years ago with 66K and very clean, Redbook said around 23K.
Go to a car yard and you'll get lots of head shaking and offers to take it off your hands as a favour for very little cash, and they'll stick a heap on it and sell it virtually immediately!
I sold mine in 3 weeks with lots of inquiries for 38K.
I'm now selling my 97 300 Tdi with 150K, very good internally, electrically and mechanically (body is average Deafener but no serious damage) for 18K and I won't sell it for much less, in fact for stupid offers the price goes UP.
It would be nice to be able to buy cheap ones but as there aren't many around, I think you're going to wait a long time or get very lucky.
Good luck anyway.
Alan.
