Talk with your local LR community or just mates who have had a RWC done on a 4WD and either get them to reccomend a bloke who is good (interpret that how you wish), or get them to help you with the lest of things to be done. As said make sure the car presents clean & tidy, I am in a similar situtation where my Series IIA is almost ready to be regoed after 5+years off the road and just plan on failing the first test to get the list of things to do.
As was also said, if you give the RWC bloke some work to do he will probs be a bit more leinent on the pedantic/annoying stuff. What needs to be done and the cost would determine whether or not I would leave my truck there to be worked on. I'll probably end up doing a mixture.
I want to drive my truck to the inspection station on a unredgestered-vehicle-permit, does anyone the rough cost of this exercise? I already know the permit is about $20 a day from QLDTransport but i'm more interested in the compulsry insurance you need to get the permit.
You can go pay a full 3rd party, drive to RWC station & QT on the reciept. The certificate (CTP) is then endorsed when you pay rego.
Also a pre RWC inspection may be prudent, if you don't like the list of repairs try another RWC station, no QT paperwork will have been filled out. If you get knocked back on RWC and fail to return QT will call your car in to go over the pits.

Basically they will try and sting you for something to generate more income. Finding an inspector who will do you the least damage is the key. I had the jeep fail because the trailer plug was secured with zip ties. Most secondhand yards have tame inspectors and it is fairly easy to find a 'phoneworthy' supplier if you are involved with the modified car scene. QT dont care and only want to see a set of matching numbers and a signature on an inspection form. They wont even look at the vehicle. The whole system is a joke and i have given QT details of many shonks over the years but they cant be bothered doing anything because it all comes back down to a money making exercise.
The short answer is that the test is a rip off conspiracy between Tranport Qld and mechanics.
I reregistered a Vitara from NSW to Qld.
The tester was a friend of a friend and found basically nothing although made serious noises about a rear main oil leak, but seeing it was not being sold blah blah.
I handed him a 50 expecting to get a 20 back as I would in NSW and he didn't make any move to remove a 20 from the till. The test was no more thorough than the test I go through every year on my cars and camper in NSW which costs $30. It is also now electronic, so the tester posts it on the RTA site. You can then pay the rego on line as the CTP is also electronic.
What a complete joke it is. You can drive a rust bucket with bald tyres and no brakes in Qld for YEARS , but go to sell it and you are fair game.
Don't get me started on Qld REVS as I bought a Jackeroo from a dealer , which they had bought from an auction and it was Encumbered, something that is impossible. I spent about 2 weeks getting the title cleared before I could register it in NSW.
