    Loved Stalingrad too.

Don't think I've ever seen Das Boot, and yet it's pretty much held up as being the movie on war.

A few of my mates were WOFTAM Reservists and I was pretty sure they'd pointed out all the relevant features of the Land Warfare Centre, or whatever it's called.

    The ending was atrocious.

Some excellent film making undone by a man who has no idea of subtlety.

Or maybe he just thinks we are all too dumb to get it ?
You must remember, the movie was made by Americans for Americans.........

    The Sound of Music(Just kidding)

Seriously, most of our favourite war movies have already been mentioned...
Great Escape, Kellys Heros, Bridge over the River Kwai, Guns of Navarone, Von Ryans Express, and one I saw a very long time ago, but it stays in my mind, called "Ice Cold in Alex".

Well to this point, the front runners are Kelly’s Heroes (10 ), Saving Pte Ryan ( 8 ), and Band of Bros ( 7 )

Das Boot was (partly) based on a true story. My uncle gave me a hard back book with a selection of photos taken by the war correspondent (Lothar-Gunther Buchheim) during his time on 'the boat'. Lothar wrote the book, and the movie is based on this. He was originally sent onboard to paint scenes of the u boats in action to help with propaganda.

The pictures are pretty disturbing (especially to a seaman like me), but some of the best pictures of war at sea I've seen.

The book includes pictures of when they stumble across another u boat on patrol in the middle of the Atlantic, which is also in the movie. Also pictures taken during a depth charging. (Make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end)

Here is a link with a bit of info'
