as representatives of a sponsor of the centenary vintage car run in 2001, my wife and i had the privilege (help ron) to share the head table with him and his 3rd wife at the gala dinner. the crowd was so big that it was spread over two halls in the exhibition centre in the ACT, Peter Brock was at the head table in the other hall.
he was amazing, some dude would come over to get his book autographed and Peter wherrett would go from mr average to mr celebrity in a second. he'd ask the guy what car he drove, the guy would say something obscure like "i was driving the Humber mk 3" and wherrett would say something like "was that the green one or the teal blue one?" "blue" the other guy would say, and wherrett would come back with "oh yeah, you were parked next to the white fc holden, yours was the one with the chrome door trim where all the earlier ones had black and the wipers were the first to use a silicon based rubber blah blah blah!"
and he did this sort of thing for everyone that came over, an amazing man and his shoes wil be hard to fill (no cross-dressing jokes please, a little weird but each to their own).
he was a a nice bloke and a great Australian and will be sadly missed.
