ADVICE PLEASE - Looking at buying a Disco

    Hi All

I am about 5 mins old on your site so bare with me please.

I am looking at spending only $8k on something I can carry camping gear in and do some beach/sand driving...not too full on but want to be comfortable enough to take a drive through some sand tracks. Obviously letting down the tyres is my first step but...

I am told the Discos are not that good in the sand either Diesel or Petrol and that they are too heavy....that they have lots of expensive issue compared to say GQ Patrols.....go easy thats just what I am told...

Well I think they look great, sound great and the 2000 model V8 I drove on the road was a pleasure...So I was hopefully just after some reassurance to go out tonight and buy one (subject to mechanical check) and have a great time in it.

Can I please have some does and donts about the Disco's that would fit into my small price range....to me it seems like you get a great deal of car for the money at this level in comparison to EVERYTHING else out there.

    Thanks in advance

hi mate for 8k i think you should be looking at an older model than a 2000, that's been well looked after so should have less to spend on it. you should get a late 300tdi for that money at the minute in really good nick with a few toys already on.

Thanks mate... I didnt think I would get a 2000 for $8k its just the only one I have driven....I would have thought 91-99 maybe for that money?

I would like a defender if they are better off road the only thing is the wife doesnt think they look as good but I can let her kow its look good and get out and dig or just sit back and relax.

So in comparison to Hilux/LCruiser/Patro/Pajereos how are they in the sand?

    Thanks again

    8k for a 2000 model is Cheap....

Aim for a car with a higher price over the norm Pre 99 Disco... say a 98 or older... Say a few 96 models are $6k, then find a perfect example for a bit more. Dont get a cheaper late model.... you will pay later...
Stick with Diesel as its kinder on the back pocket, get a full service history one.
Make sure the timing belt on the Diesel has been done every 80k or less.

Otherwise... a great 4WD.... and to heavy... Ya right... its smaller then a 80 series or Patrol...

With centre diff locked and tyres aired down, they are OK on sand. Nothing like a light little Suzuki of course, but pretty good.

We've got a Diesel which hasn't got the grunt of a V8 but no problems on Stockton Beach, Fraser, Goolwa Beach, etc etc. Got horribly bogged at Robe (Sth East SA) but that was going to bog anything. Spent a long time digging that day .....

For 8k you would be looking at a good example of a Discovery series 1 (something 96-98 model maybe) plus some change for a few extras. I can't say i've driven many other 4wds on beaches but i've not had any problems driving my discovery. Diesel will be alot easier on fuel (10l/100km vs 16l/100km for the v8) Also good service history and watch out for rust esp in the roof alpine windows.
