Ok thanks for that people, Im going to have a look at the one on special at Repco for $75, I think its a Tecmen brand........but I will have a look around at a tool place in town and see what they have.

So if its got batterys its no good? , I noted that some have what looks like little solar panels above the view window I guess thats instead of batterys?

I also take it that most are ajustable for slower or quicker tint time? Its going to be weird for the first time using one........ So what I do now is have the tint viewer up and when I just about to strike I flip it down (full face with flip up tint thingo , so with an auto one you just strike it and the helmet does the rest?

My understanding is that the adjustment is for the amount of tint on some of the better models, and sensitivity but not the delay time.
I was worried about buying a helmet with a slow reaction time and getting flashed, however those in the know tell me that the worst case scenario is that you *might* get a quick little flash before the lens reacts, but it won´t damage your eyes. It may make your eyes a little tired at the end of a long welding day, but the clear glass is enough to stop the UV component of the light from damaging your eye (i.e. sand in the eye at 3am).

I think that they all have batteries of some type in them - mine are rechargeable by the solar panel, and for that reason the helmet should not be stored in a dark cupboard. The lens ¨fails safe¨, that is to say it´s dark until power is applied to make it clear.

    Hope this helps

Thanks again for the input all.

I ended up getting the Tecmen $75 repco job. I put it outside in the sun for 4hrs and then tried it out in the shed for a quick demo........And Im very happy with it, works a treat

    Regards & Thanks

Why did you put it out in the sun? The solar`panel does not have to be charged - it works off the arc of the welder.

    Confused

All the ones I've seen offer the shades adjustment 9-13 , The Slow Delay AutoDarkening equates to perhaps millisecs or even micro secs delay , not seconds.

I've had mine on Maximum delay with least sensitivity and still no welders flash.

If you are welding inside and sensitivity is too high even looking at the flouro lights auto-darkens the helmet , that gets a little annoying as the helmet keeps Auto-Darkening just from ambient light.

I got it home and it didnt work that well, then I did a net search and alot of people from differant sites said you must charge the batterys for at least 2 hours and not to store in the box etc.

So I sat it in the sun for a few hours and it worked great......

My $65 Tecmen from Bunnings does not have batterys - the screen is powered directly from the solar panel - when the arc is struck the brilliant light excites the solar panel that then powers the lens. All happens instantaneously.

    Does yours have a battery?

Mate I see what your saying, but I cant see any large batterys as such but I was guessing there are small power storage unit of some kind........
