Trying to pick a route south

I'm still planning our trip later this year. At this stage I have 2 options to get across to Townsville, either via the gulf country, KFC, Lawn Hill etc or down to the Barkley and straight across. At this point it looks like most of the gulf is still a soggy mess and roads and tracks are still cut. So its the "like to do" but may not happen.

Anyway I'm now after ideas to take in the following: Winton, Longreach, Gladstone. I'm thinking of going out to Birdsville and Poeples Corner then meandering, down to Broken Hill - maybe also take in Cameron's Corner - and then back over to Sydney. I have 4 weeks to do this in and as there's a few long hauls then it won't be too much.

So any suggestions, must see's, etc, you can throw at me are appreciated. This is about my 10th attempt at putting together the eastern half of our trip.

We've travelled all the east coast, though haven't spent much time in the SE of QLD or north coast NSW. Also never really been out SW QLD and haven't been to NW NSW in about 30 years.

BM's never been to Sydney, so we'll spend a few days there and do the highlights.

What do you like to look at??? Hmmm.... lots of things, what ever looks interesting to us.

One of my favorite places is the Mount Warning NP
    Info is HERE
For sure some of the southeast members can recommend you a inside road from
the back of the Gold Coast to Lismore by Mount Warning.
Beutiful back roads are in the area.
    Cheers

    WELL................

if you are coming via Lawn Hill must stop at Riversleigh Fossil Site...free not big BUT very interesting..when we were there there was a student from James Cook Uni and talking to her was fassinating....Longreach...stockmans Hall of Fame and across he road Qantas's BIG planes...Charlieville...Royal flying doctors and the school of the Air..and you must stop at the Corones Hotel in the main street for nostalgia reasons and the bute museum and top food.....Roma.. if you are into oil and gas exploration (which I worked in for many years) then The Big Rig...Miles has one of the best pioneer museums we have found in the country and just nth on the Leichhardt Hwy is Possum park which has old air raid shelters to store Ammo which you can sleep in now and is a caravan park..............

hhhmmmm will get back with more info when I take a breath

Thanks Mrs H2. Lawn Hill and Riversleigh is on the agenda but at this stage the roads around the gulf are only slowly opening. I believe Mt Isa to Riversleigh and on to Lawn Hill is open to 4WD with some minor flooding. I'm hoping to come in from Hells Gate through KFC (King Fisher Camp) and then on to Lawn Hill and Riversleigh. KFC is a beautiful spot to camp. If we can't come in from the top track we will be on the Barkley then will have to see if its worth going up to Riversleigh, it may mean we have to back track to the Barkley again.

You might want to consider coming this way and looking at Western Plains Zoo.
