Owwwww, Kidney Stone

One day a while ago, started to feel sick in the morning progressively got worse during the afternoon - then I got a sharp pain in my back and I told my boss I was going to Duntroon Military hospital which was about 4ks away - interesting drive.

A kidney stone was diagnosed as I writhed on the floor in pain. The sympathetic nurse said that I now had some idea what child birth was like - my response was "well why don't you give me an epidural then" haha was the response and I threw up everywhere.

I was admitted, given pethidine and passed a grain of sand sized stone the following day.

Interestingly because I was in the military at the time, I was seen immediately and admitted to the hospital. Apparently if I had gone to Canberra Hospital I would have had to wait (in extreme pain) so that the staff were sure I was not bunging it on. Apparently the local druggies pretend they have the symptoms so that they can get a shot of Morphine or Pethidine but if they do not get it quickly they get impatient and leave where the real patients remain.

Kidney stones are not nice - mine was caused by extreme dehydration brought on by a small medical procedure I had the day before.

Well I've had both pancreatitis and a kidney stone (not at the same time). Which one is worse, I don't know but what I can say is that Pethidine is nice.

Pethidine or Morphine - I dont mind. But it is easy to see how people get hooked on them, and similar pain killers.

Good to have these things available when needed, but have to be careful not to use them "just in case" or because it is easy.

When I passed the kidney stones (1980) I was at Ryde hospital (NSW) in agony for about 6 hours.
No pain killers for me, the Dr in charge was worried that I was putting an act to get free drugs :angrylock:

When I saw the specialist couple days after he told me that the pain during passing kidney stones is one of the most severe that the human body can take and that it is common to have marks in the hearth because the pain.
Well 30 years after during a hearth test they found marks in my heart :(

I have a kidney stone. It's my first....brought on from a lifestyle of never drinking enough water.

I thought "I know what, I'll see if anyone on the forum has any experience" and I'm not sure whether I'm glad that I did nor not. Outstanding horror stories, folks.

So, after a CT scan to figure out why I had quite so much claret in my water, they found a stone in my left kidney of around 6mm in diameter....and a benign tumor in my right one. Doc isn't sure which is causing the haematuria but says that flushing out the stone is the first thing to do.

It's been a week - I'm drinking GALLONS of water and while I have no back pain anymore (never really had a lot anyway), I doubt I've passed the stone because from what you lot are telling me, it's horrendously painful when it comes out the front door.

How long does it take to flush the buggers out? Everytime I go for a wee it's like playing Russian Roulette.

I had a couple of them about 15 years ago. Not a happy time, one of the other RN I was working working with in the ICU at the time, said that my skin colour went from pink, through white, grey and then green in a matter of a few seconds.

Had to go to the ED, the Doc ordered morphine, then an hour and a half later the RN still hadn't given it to me. Was in such agony, I blerted out "what are you growing the poppies or what?" (There were a couple of other expletives in the phrase. :o )

Took about 3 days to pass and were the result of drinking too little fluids and water. Haven't made that mistake again.

I managed to spit a 6mm stone out 10 minutes before they were going to operate on me :)

It was quite a relief when it landed in the tin :D It was the worst pain I've ever gone through in my life, you have my sympathy.

How long is a piece of string.

It depends a lot on where in the ureter it is or has passed into the bladder. They can flush it out, cut it out or sometimes use lithotripsy, intense ultrasonic waves to bust up the stone so it can be passed in smaller pebbles. Each with their own exquisite pain. :BigCry:

You blokes bring a tear to my eye just reading these posts. Have had other medical problems, not kidney stones. Don't want any of the little beggars either.;) Hey, does beer drinking count as keeping your fluids up!!:twisted:

Wow 6mm diameter. Based on my experience passing kidney stones - that one's going to be fun.

I found going for a drive, as a passenger, seemed to help get them through once they have started moving. Maybe the vibration has something to do with it, who knows.
