A good Russian road test video! Includes the necessary "shooting it with a machine gun" test. A Defender wouldn't have looked so good after being shot, that's for sure.

The wife's younger brother bought a new Samara in Adelaide a few years back. Shortly after, he set off on a drive across the paddock to visit us in Kalgoorlie. By the time he got here, the entire top of the dash had melted / buckled into a twisted mess.
Some time later (back in Adelaide), he had a front wheel bearing failure. The car was off the road for more than a month while they sourced replacement parts (believe that they used Fiat parts in the end).
Agreed, Russian cars were a laughing stock when I emigrated 20 or so years ago. The old joke was to double the value of a lada you simply filled it with petrol. May be better now ?
I have personally worked on their electronic kit again a few years back. It was very basic, old, badly made generally agricultural in design and build quality.

Martin

I thought car ownership was forbidden or discouraged in the former USSR…

Only if you were a soviet leader like Leonid Illich Brezhnev, then you could make up your own set of rules that no one else could live by.
Also you could have a car; but to my best understanding, it was still property of the state.

It was quite legal to have a car. Indeed it was a bit discouraged by high prices, regular gasoline shortages (as well as continuous lack of replacement parts) and poor service. OTOH, there were no traffic jams
bwhahahaha
Russia is a hard place to understand as are Russians. Moscow before ww2 claimed the best living standards in Europe, having said that Europe as a dog of a place that’s why aussie looked so good. The best thing to happen to European cities was Bomber command.
I would go as far as to say that until the late 70s Russia would have been an ok place, the shortages we all know about were the result of economic policies and some smart economical pressure from mainly the US the last straw was a fertilizer stuff up that just about wiped out the countries grain crops. That’s why aussie got some Ladas, cars for Grain, New Zealand cars for butter etc ) add to that the cost of Afghanistan.
Standard Russian joke
A man works hard for 20 years, saves his Kopeks and finally has enough money to by a car. he goes to the car dealer, fills out his forms, but being a savvy Russian he ticks the boxes of what he dint like. He ticks blue because he wants a red car etc. When all is done he hands over his money gets his receipt and then asks when he can have delivery.
The sales person replies march 19 in 2 years time. he accepts this as 2 years is not so long he had previously had to wait 3 years for his fridge. thinking as he walked out the door he turns and asks, is that in the morning or the afternoon. the sales person checks the diary and replayes afternoon. GOOD he says, the Plummer is over to fix the toilet in the mooring.
That joke is not responded with laughter but with everyone saying DA DA DA with big smiles and slaps on the back
