I've got a carton that says that since you now know what the problem is that if you read the autos tute in the forum that you can reason out the logic to arrive at the same conclusion.

If you're interested go read it up and see if you can work out how I got to the pump or the supply being the problem.

    the threads here

Ive greyd out my logic below so that its a little harder to accidentally read
have a stab and see if you can work to the same conclusion I did

when there was no mention of

"my auto sounds like dwarves are wresting in a blender while wearing chainmail armour" it wasnt mechanical

since it was selecting it wasnt valves or the clutch packs and I suspected that they hadnt been touched anyway

ruling out the TC being totally skippy edwards because it was able to apply significant drive

since the thing got better with more RPM's that suggested that there was an oil flow problem which wasnt caused by an internal pressure loss or bypass which left the pump (which dumps us back at hydraulics 101)

90% of all hydraulic problems are flow related in most cases is a dodgy supply to the pump or relief valve and the only way to get bad flow in an auto is with poor suction or a seal problem on the pump because the relief valve in most autos is after all the important stuff so that if it does get a littly iffy you still get a supply of pressure to get it to sort of work and to maintain lube.

Mate if we were all that clever blokes like you would be unemployed. If it wasn't for guys such as your self, I'd be on shanks pony.

Just out of interest, a few years back I had a BW 55/Asian Warner rebuilt by an "auto specialist", it was still working but tired when he got it. Within a week of its return it had no drive whatsoever, and was returned on a tilt tray. His insurance covered the warranty cost, which was utter disintergration of the planetary gears. He covered the cost the following week, but refused the week after. I ended up putting in the ever reliable BW 35 myself. My question is, what would cause three catastaphic failures in as many weeks that was beyond the diagnoses of an expert?

at a guess if it was tired and sloppy excess play in the bearings supporting the planetaries putting stress on the teeth taking them out or if it was one of the early sintered gear jobs the metalurgy failing. the casing could have also been out of whack and not supporting the shafts correctly.

autos like manuals can do the cascade failure thing you replace one bit and then the next bit that the new thing touches gets taken out.

lets say I replaced the TC cause it was knackered. Then I replaced the pump support plates because they were knackered and then the front planetry set gave up. I'd write the box off as being beyond economical repair and usually before I touch a box thats got signs of abuse, is long in the tooth or been used for towing I'll make that disclaimer before I even start.

It's a big ass cover on my side but I do it for everything so that If I wind up with what I call a cascade failure situation and someone whose being unreasonable I can give it the "look I advised you at the start that this was a possability, the entire thing is stuffed and is not going to be repairable you wanted the cheap way out and that didnt work now its going to cost you" line.

Supposedly it was a brand new box in the original housing, cause had him stuffed, so I figured if I needed a mechanic, I needed a better one than him.

autos are a bit of a dark art (like reading entrails) when it comes to post failure diagnostics the line between cause and symptom can be very fine and often blurry. I suspect that this is one that Im not going to be able to accurately work out without seeing it.

a good anology is the old school headgasket/radiator hose question.

the engine siezed because it over heated. But did the engine over heat because the radiator hose came off/failed which then took out the head gasket through over heating or did the radiator hose come off/fail becasue the head gasket let go and overpressurised the cooling system?

Not sure yet. The starter motor is cactus, so once I change that and see how she runs, I'll decide whether to keep her, sell her as is or wreck her for parts. If I do keep her I'll probably just give her a good tidy up, a couple of inches in the springs and some decent tyres and set her up for camping and touring.
