Well..... I've always been a coil type of person, but if I'd bought a vehicle with SLS, then I'd most definately be maintaining the system rather than fitting coils. If you keep on top of maintenance and carefully sort any modifications if applicable then they should be fine.
Thanks to all who offered their advice.
I ended up replacing the airbacks with Kings coils front and rear and have now done about 600Klm plus some good offroad. they are great. I also got and 1" lift out of the new coils.
My decision was based on the fact that while many loved the air suspension those who had trouble with them in the outback had MAJOR problems.
I also tow (a ball weight of about 300) and the springs have made no difference to the drivability or towing ability.
Ive just about finished work on the car and will be heading north to Lake Ayre in 2 weeks so Ill post some pics
Thanks again
Greg
you tow a load, and you "took off" the airbags?? :no2:
must ride like a truck with those coils,,:(
gee you guys are picky
Ball weight and towing capacity tested at TJM bendigo, ride if anything has improved, particularly off road.
The car is well maintained and regularly, proffessionaly serviced. As I said when I raised this issue the bags and compressor where 10 Years old and had to be repaired by a bush mechanic so needed to be replaced.
My decision was not based on cost. I should add that while I sought input from Aulro I asked three different landrover mechanics that I know and none were big fans of the air bag system.
This is my first disco but my third landrover so "I get it" thought im not a purist.
One thing the anti-air workshops would not have told you is that removal of the air systems also lowers the towing capacities – check the owner’s manual for the fine print on loadings with coil rear springs.
BTW the D2 is legal for max 250kg ball weight no matter what bar is fitted
