As they were... A trip down memory lane.

I was looking through some of my dad's old photos a few months ago and found a few of him (with long hair, lamb-chop sideburns and aviators...) plugging his old 2A shorty around the bush.

It would have been about 1975, and my dad was my age!

It occurred to me that the majority of people on this site were fortunate enough to either live through the golden years of Land Rover, or the period just after when Landies were common, cheap transport for a young lad or ladette looking to explore this big brown lump.

Those days are now gone - lost to the hustle and bustle of Corollas and Astra's and mummy's BMW, but there are a few of us trying to grab a taste of the better old days. I don't want a car that is smarter than I am - I want a truck that I can fix with fencing wire and fuel on whatever burns. By the same token, I am not rebuilding Gus to be a show pony - I intend to drag him kicking and screaming back to 1958 at the start of his life and put him through it all again!

So, rack your brains, scan your photos - I want to know where you were in your series landy "back in the day".

Even if you don't want to go into detail - just a pic or a short story. Not just trips either also everyday stuff. Spinning spanners, a run to the drive in movie, the tips and tricks you had to make your landy more liveable.

Maybe I'm silly, but if I look at those old photos long enough I can almost imagine the days of Landys and FJ40s and G60s.

    Can't stand technomolology....

Saying that my landrover hates me with a passion, i sweare she didn't want to be put back on the road in fear of what was planned for her

Will try and find a couple of piccys of dad and the 60series on Fraser Island in the 80s - I still have the maps and the Fraser Island permit from 1986

I would if I could Jack!

They are at my dads house... which is in Perth.

I'll just have to live vicariously through everyone else until I can get my hands on them!

My first experience involving a Series Land Rover took place whilst I was still in school.
A mate of mine's father had a property down in the Riverina and had just bought this nice new S1 4x4 sporty little rag top. One afternoon the mate 'borrowed' Dads new toy and decided to take all of us youngsters on a run around the town. It probably would have been quite an uneventful little jaunt had he not decided to do circles around the centre street light pole whilst I held on to the pole from the back seat and the local copper came around the corner at the same time.
A bit of a lecture about the dangers of so called "hooning" (way back in those days too) and he sent us on our way. No mention about licenses (most of us held farming permits which allowed us to drive a truck loaded with wheat in bags from the property to the mill and return) so all was sweet.
Two days later I came home to be greeted by the sight of the local Police car parked in front of our house and the bobby (really quite a nice bloke) speaking quite earnestly to my father. Not too long after that event was when the backside fell out of my little world for about the next two weeks! Luckily my father wasn't a violent tempered man, but needless to say I didn't have much to do with Land Rovers for quite a while after that event.

Probably my next significant exposure to the beasts was on an O/S holiday that I took when I was about 22 or so.
I am not too sure what I was looking so worried about when the following shot was taken, probably wondering how long it was to knock off time or some such thing.
This shot may explain why I collect what I do.

    Regards
    Glen

I dont have any photos because cameras are banned Tindal air base. it was the late 80's may have even been K89 anyhoo, a chinnok was bringing in a defender into a spot that is now an air strip, back then it was demountables and surounded by trees, the pilot must have been in a hurry because he smashed the defender through a bloody great tree before landing it. smashed the hell out of it. I watched it from probably no more than 20m away truely amazing stuff to have seen.

ps Andrew, my 1st experience with Land Rovers was at high school, a S1 80", never got a ride in it, only the rich kids around Maitland (Marist Bros/PRISON), I bought my 1st Land Rover in 1969 S1 80" and everyone thought I was a nut case, why would you want to drive that around LOL and the rest is history,,.
