My uneducated opinion is that the oil companies milk fuel prices for all they can. They jacked the prices up and up and up and up and weakened the global economy as companies were forced to absorb the prices. Other companies reacted and the big one popped in the US which slammed the world economy as the effects rippled outwards and offshore. They had to retract the oil prices due to the change in the worlds economic condition and the threat of major ongoing depression and long term losses as a result, so they were part of the global solution - not to mention I would bet there was some very heavy leaning on them by other "bodies". As the economy stabalises a fraction they will wind on the price again to see what they can get without popping the economy as if they have no conscience, recollection or social sympathy. I actually think that they are the ones that created the environment for the great meltdown but never got the blame for it and I think they will continue to charge everything that they can to keep themselves at their economic prime irrespective of the everything else.
