Not sure how old the basic diesel design was but it is good and solid and in Aust was the first in the landrover range to be electronically contolled. The engine was also the basis of the TD5 - a great engine.

I would agree that the TD4 is a better engine but only because it produces 10kw more power and being commonrail is more high tech - not much else.

So what is to be not recommended about the old L series - it is a good honest, exceptionally reliable engine that gives good fuel economy.

Nothing actually wrong with the Rover L series diesel engine. Just that diesel engines went through a rapid improvement phase in the late nineties which is reflected in the TD4 engine.

The L series was originally a Perkins small diesel engine which Rover picked up and re worked in the early nineties. The newer TD4 engine produces a vehicle with the driveability of a petrol car with a deicent fuel economy improvement. The older engine is a more traditional slow, noisey and rough diesel engine in comparison.

Absolutely... But that's not a reason to not recommend it!

Sure the TD4 is a better engine but the older XEDi is still a very strong unit and relatively trouble free.

I've had my XEDi for 8yrs. It's one of the originals, it has been flogged something rotten before I had it and it's still going strong. Frankly, it is one of the cheapest cars to run which I've ever owned.

Hi I am looking at a 1998 Freelander, petrol...It has 190,000kms and had all servicing done too, very tidy and indeed fun to drive. Do you know much about these models? For what we are looking at getting it for a weekend away perhaps a few trips here and there nothing too extreme and city driving to and from work also.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
