Hello all, SWMBO here
Looking at a freelander 1998 onwards, Wondering
What are they like?
What goes Wrong?
Petrol vs Diseal?
What is a resonable price?
Your thoughts and experiences would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Sarah

If you get one, we will bag you out for not having a real one like us fender drivers
Freeo 2 is a seriously nice vehicle, have even considered getting one myself(for the wife)
Looked at a freo 1 in 2003. We bought a Subaru Forester.

Try Googling: land rover freelander engine problems
You will get a couple of matches
Diesel is not so bad, but a LOT of problems with the earlier petrol engines (head gaskets), and the viscous coupling that eventually locks solid and is expensive to repair.
Don't listen to them, Sarah - There is a place for Freelanders in this world....on a snatch strap behind a Defender.![]()

Oh, come on guys! The Freelander is not all bad. From all I've heard the 2.5l V6 petrol and the diesel versions were quite good. The car itself seems to be a good car from what I've heard. The real problem seems to have been the 1.8l 4 cylinder petrol 'K' motor. They seem to retain their resale value all right.
Its easy to be smart, but Sarah is asking a serious question and at least we should give her a serious answer. Perhaps those who have actual experience with Freelanders could offer some realistic comment.

I used to own one, 1998 XEi, which unfortunately was the K-series engine.
Good points: We loved it, took us heaps of places and is a lot more capable than all the other wannabe compacts out there. We compared general build to some of the others and the FL was way stronger.
I think the newer ones look awesome but I suspect you're not in that price bracket (who is for a small car?)
Bad Points: The aforementioned head gasket - we were lucky LRA came to the party and forked out a fair bit of the cost but I would stay away from that engine. I have no experience of the other engines except we test drove a TD4 prior to buying the disco in 2003 - very nice, the auto was sweet as.
I'm over 6' and I found the headroom "tight" and probably didn't get the best driving position from it.
Servicing - if I ever take one near JC it could be the end of a beautiful friendshipyou WILL be relying on your dealership - if that's a good or bad thing is up to you
If I was in the market for something that size would I buy another one? if I moved interstate and wasn't relying on JC, maybe - the heart says yes, the head says no but that's always the way with Land Rovers isn't it? At the end of the day it's you that drives it and looks at it in the driveway.
not sure if any of that helps
Good Luck!

My better half got her FL last year, a 2003/4 MY, Td4, good nick, decent price. So far, the car has proven its worth. I actually never liked the FL before, now I could do with one as well. Really nice to drive and much more capable offroad than you may think (and most people ever will need). There were not many troubles worth speaking of (yet, that is), except for some starting and running problems that could be traced back to the Airflow meter and fuel lift pump. Easliy remedied by exchanging the faulty components. It's a shame that the Lord of Darkness and his staff had a go with this otherwise inherently rather reliable engine.
As said, no troubles since! Get yourself into one, you won't regret it.
Cheers
Johannes
There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
