    Army Reserves Help?!

I am currently a uni student looking for a casual job. I have decided i don't want to work in a typical job rather i would like to join the Reserves as a Driver. I was just curious if anyone on here is in the reserves and if they could let me know what the lifestyle is like?

As i live at home and am still committed to local activities such as uni, would it still be possible to join? from my understanding there is an initial 28 day recruitment training and after that there is a annual 2 week training camp.

Basically i am looking at how often i would be away from home in the following 6 months if i were to join. I am booked in for a information session next Tuesday, but thought i would turn to my AULRO family for some information

    Kind Regards James.

    Thumbs up

    James,

I assume your info session is at the Adamstown depot ? If not, it's a good place to ask as well....I know that Transport Company of 8th Combat Service Support Battalion ( 8 CSSB ) is based there - Tel: (02) 4979 3663.

In the first six months you do a recruit course at Kapooka (Wagga) - it takes 28 days.

After that you commence Initial Employment Training (IET) - Land Rover qualification - 2 weeks - but when that occurs depends on the courses schedule (typically within the first year).

From there you can expect to do other driver courses over the next 12 - 18 months, depending on your availability. These courses are for Unimogs, Macks, etc.

Here's some info about being a driver in 8 CSSB. ( Click on link 'Transport Company' then link 'Transport Driver' .

    Have fun,

    Pete

the truckies at my unit turn up most tuesday nights and commit to one weekend a month, some do more some do less

time away, it will take a good 12 months + to get qualified as a driver which would be a min of 2 weeks over that period

if your not availalble to go away than there is not much the unit can do, it is a part time job and i put my day time job and family first

i have been doing the reserve thing for a long time so i get to pick and choose what i do and as they are short of tradies i never get hassled

I will be going to the Adamstown base. I will have many a question to ask! my main concern being time which i will have to spend away from home and at what stages in the time i will do my training for each vehicle class. I am hoping there is a decent amount of offroad training in the Land Rovers and Unimogs!

Would be a great way to gain some maturity as well i believe.

Do it....best time to do it when you are young...

I went through Kapooka when I was 35...and found it a bit hard as the training is designed for young guys who don't know how to iron, shave or make beds....there's a lot of that in your first week at Kapooka. Just do as you are told and you will be fine.

I am a Sapper (Combat Engineer) with 2CER at Enoggera in Brisbane...driving mogs is great fun, but blowing up stuff is even better!

    Cheers

    what lr v8 said.

and be prepared to be dissapointed with the driver training.

ITs gone downhill, my advice. Find the oldest crustiest instructor you can and hang with them.

do you know that you can get the army to pay for your uni if you sign up to go full time, i believe it's mainly for the Dark side though (officers).

Now if you don't go the Dark side you should be in RAEME, that is the best corp of them all.

Basic training is pretty easy just do as your asked and don't take it personly when the section comander is yelling, they do yell and scream some times but it's all over soon then the best feeling is the march out.

Dark Side? - please explain. I'd like to hear what you mean... quite simply 'coz I am at the final stages of the process of joining the dark side - officer selection board this Sunday, then Sydney Uni Regiment.

James, take LRV8's advice and ring 8CSSB direct. They'll be able to give you timings for courses and when you would be able to undertake them.

Good luck Turtle61!! The selection board isn't too hard. Stay focused, think about what you're doing and you should be right. Remember, it's not necessarily whether you complete a task, but how you go about it.
