Hummer H1 vs Defender

- yes they have changed heaps. 37inch tyres and all of them over here have spare tyres and, jerry can, and armour everywhere. all this weight lowers the tyre clearance but stilll quiet capable off road.
- This thread has become interesting so i thought i would go have closer look. no portal axles just long trravel independent susp. unless its a combination of both.
- still not the safest thing for roadside bombs. no v-shape bottom.
-got some low ran gearing in them too........................................:p

Oh, no question of that - they are four wheel independent suspension, which of course means my description "portal axle" is inexact - but they do have the key feature of a portal axle, which is a hub reduction gear enabling the drive axle to be set above the centre of the wheel, so that drive can be provided to the wheel without reducing ground clearance to an unacceptable figure and at the same time avoiding an excessive angle on the driving shafts.

Not at $US310,000 they won't ;) 100 vehicles are to be made initially as the 1st run , so they will be waiting a while :p

They do not have armored floors. Nor do the HMMWV's in standard form. There are many derivatives and most of what goes to hot zones now days are armored as the silly drivers think that they look like a tank so they must be armored like one!

The original tender went out to make a light recon vehicle but when GMC came back with design the military could seen so many more opportunities for it. The HMMWV is purpose built for the military, the H1 was a "great idea" by GM who originally purchased the rolling chasis off GMC and finished the work in their factory to make their URBAN H1 vehicles. Don't get the two confused. As for the H2 & H3's these are as much like the HMMWV as a Freelander is to a SAS LR!
