Thread: A Question for the Vic boys

Bright, Mt Beauty & Milawa are all beautiful places to go visit. The Bogong high plains are absolutely stunning, especially in winter. Driving the great apline road is something I think everyone needs to do. I went through a month ago just as a light snow cover was forming.

You won't be able to take your dogs into the alpine national parks at all. The rangers are (rightfully so) really full on with it.

So are they all national parks that you have listed?...I don't want to know about places I can't take the dogs because I'm taking them!!

or are those places not in the Alpine national parks

Milawa and Bright are fine but Mt Beauty is NP and I suspect that as the Alpine Way goes through NP it will be "no dogs"

As a dog owner and with a good knowledge of Victoria I'm hard pressed to think of anywhere significant and scenic that is dog friendly.

Have you got "Camping with Dogs" it might prove helpful?

Victoria - All National Parks are dog 'no go' areas however they are only a small part of what is available to you and your dogs. Forget them!

Do a search for Victorian State Forests. There are 300,000 square kilometres of State Forest available to you in Victoria. All are free to enter 12 months of the year round and you can hunt, fish, prospect, camp, four wheel drive etc to yours and your dogs hearts content. And most State Forests are located in and around the high country.

Also try searching the DSE [Department of Sustainability] website for State Forests.

You can also contact the DSE offices in the major towns/areas where you think you might be going. eg Bright. These people on the front line are usually more than helpfull.

Hi Grumbles I know all national parks are off limits other than in tassie i believe thats why the thread is up here....its no different to NSW no dogs in here either.

I suppose I was just hoping I could save some time by asking about places rather than having to go hunt them down as there is nothing better than finding a great camping spot that not everyone goes too but only the locals know about

Do a search for State Forests and also search the Victorian DSE wsebsite. [Department of Sustainability].

Also ask the DSE offices in those areas which you might like to visit.

There is the opion of droping the dogs off at "doggie hotels" (kennels) whilst visiting no go areas.
We travelled to Broome and beyond with 3 golden retrievers.We kenneled them in Broome whilst heading up the Gibb river rd and down to Fitzroy crossing.
Most doggie hotels pamper their guests.

The High Country covers an area from the NSW/Vic border East of Albury to the coast and is then a broad sweep south to Gippsland and also West to Wangaratta. It's a huge area. It can also be as rough and as isolated as you want. And in September it might be extremely wet with many a tough and/or mountain stream crossing and hill to challenge [or stop] you.
