Apparently this is a thing now:

Some auto makers are putting a second set of tail lights in the boot, so that vehicle lights are visible when the boot lid is up (for example pulled over on the side of the road while loading the boot).

I'm guessing the drivers probably lucky he wasn't doing his usual "sleeping in the cab whilst he's being loaded trick".
