And all that money spend and lives lost on the "War on Terrorism" will probably just result in more ****ed off people in the Middle East, more fundamentalism, and more terrorism.
The Western sponsored/supported Arab Spring will just leave behind power vacuums in the wake of all the fallen dictators, which will quickly be filled by more Islamic fundamentalists. Just look what's happening in Egypt, Iraq, Libya, and right now in Syria.
Saddam Hussien, Ghadaffi, Mubarak and Assad are/were all nasty characters, but at least they kept a check the fundamentalist. Democracy cannot be transplaned to such countries and be expected to thrive.
Forget about BATTLESHIP!
This is the movie to see:

The key to the future lies not in the Arab peninsula and islamic nations, but in Africa. To do nothing as (I think) you imply will simply allow that continent to succumb to even more radical fundamentalism. The difference?....'proper' dictators, nasty pasties and un-savoury leaders in Africa, generally exploit their own people and leave the rest of the world alone. But! islamic fundamentalists are now 'spreading' their own brand of hatred and vitriol. Are we to stand idly by 'hoping' they don't export it to this country or other countries?
Whilst I don't subscribe to the 'oil nation' mentality, I do believe that once we are no longer wedded to mid east oil, no-one will give a toss about the arabian peninsula as long as they keep to themselves.
A case in point is indeed Syria. The world hopes it ends well, but because they don't generally export terrorism, no-one really cares. That is in my view an internal struggle deserving to remain so.
I also believe the west wants a bob each way in some respects. I have lived in and visited most of the countries mentioned and believe me, they are lacking in the fundamentals. It is not by accident that these countries don't train and nurture enough nurses, doctors, educators and scientists, and yet they want access to and equal standing in these fields.
Anyhow, I just realised I am entering rant territory and should stop now.:D:D
No offence intended.:p:p
