Hi,
The improvised truck/jet engines may have been from the Kuwait oil fires.
The story told to me was that the Yanks had all their experts out there and were taking weeks to put out each of their allotted fires.
A couple of Yugoslavs put in for a few fires, and had them out in a day or so with their old trucks and jury rigged jet engines.
Apparently they would spend time building a static water supply, bring up the jet, rig up pumps and venturies for the water, fire up the jet and literally blast the oil fire with tons of water, literally swamping it.
They were overtaken by Yanky technology when the Yanks cottoned on to the idea and designed purpose built oil fire fighting rigs based on the proven techniques of the improvised units.
Not sure how accurate the above is, just a campfire story, late at night over a few ports.
cheers
Edit: Sorry for getting the nationality wrong, and thanks for the post below. The memory ain't what it used to be.
