    Re-Grooving

Does anybody out there have any experience with re-grooving tyres (Muddies). I've picked up a set of Simex Trekker II's with about 30-40% thread left. They say that these tyres have quite a lot of rubber left and that they could be re-grooved or is re-grooving something that is frowned upon.

Is there someone that does re-grooving or where could I get hold of a re-grooving tool keeping in mind I am over in WA (Perth).

    Thanks, Jurgens.

As a forklift mechanic I own a regrooving machine for doing industrial tyres
The deal is a road going tyres can only be regrooved if says it can be on the side wall of the tyre.
The only tyres I have seen these days with regrooveable on the side wall is long haul heavy duty truck tyres.
Even these tyres can only be regrooved a few millimeters before you hit the steel cords in the tyre.
Industrial equiptment tyres if puncture proof type are a different kettle of fish as you just keep on regrooving them deep as possible ,time after time.
For private property off road use or private road racing use then It is common sense .
For road racing tyre on private roads you will find these tyre were designed with regrooving in mind so the tyres can be tune tuned to suit the track conditions of the day.
For off road work on private property if you see a experienced tyre fitter he can do it for you....but if they think the tyres are going on a public road in any way forget it

101Ron is correct. Regrooving is only legal if the tyres are marked "Regrooveable" on the sidewalls. Usually only done nowadays on metro buses. Yonks ago, in the used car trade, we routinely regrooved tyres to save a few bob. I know a bloke who still has his kit and will do the job at customer request. He makes sure his doors are closed whilst doing the job though. Usually done to get a Safety Certificate without spending money.
