Thanks, I've got a couple of spare belts in the shed, so I'll fit them on the weekend and see if it goes away before I order in a new balancer.

I don't think it's a slipping belt as that should occur sprodically, not just on first start; and it's quite loud.

    Anyone got any ideas?
This is quite a normal description of belt squeal. It usually shows up when the engine is cold, with maximum load from the alternator, topping up the battery after having started a cold engine.

The belt will also grip better when it warms up a bit - reducing or eliminating the squeal.

The belt may be dirty or getting worn, or the tensioner may need checking. While the pulley may be a problem, the belt & tensioner are more likely culprits.

    Cheers,

Firstly, BigJon, to answer your question, no, it doesn't go away when I brake.

Secondly, I should have had a closer look before. The ridges on all the pulleys are shiny like something's been polishing them (like a fan belt!)

And, I can get the car to make the noise by going onto full lock at low speed, where the power steering pump would be working harder.

So i;ts a fair bet it's the belts. I'll change them this weekend.

Thanks to everyone for the advice!
