    Rego and CTP please help!

G,day, This might sound like a dumb question but I have sold my car which runs out of rego tomorrow. new buyer said he will buy it if i put 12 months rego on it, which is fine I was going to do it any way. but since my name and details are on the green slip and he will own and drive the car, how is he coverd? or does the new buyers details get automatically transferred through the RTA.

    Thanks
    Will.

as far as I know the CTP (green slip) gets automatically transferred when the new buyer registers the vehicle in his name with the RTA.

    Cheers,

X2 - and don't forget to submit the notice of disposal, in the event the new owner is a bit tardy in going to the RTA...may save some statutory declarations when the reminder notices arrive for the fines he/she incurred after buying it.

Yep, CTP transfers with the rego (in NSW at least). I re-registered a bike for a bloke before selling it to him. It was a few hundred cheaper for him.

mate....serious advice here.....do not let the new owner drive the car unless you know the papers are signed over .....a couple of years ago I let a dealer "do it all" for me and he sold the car still in my name .....the result was catastrophic.....the new owner joyroad the car through radar, speed cameras, melbournes tunnels etc running up a huge number of infringements in my name which of course vic police etc would not believe that I was not responsible for.....it took 2 years of protracted arguments , threats against me, multiple statutory declarations and verbal fights to finally clear my name during which time I was threatened with a barrage of fines, imprisonment, court cases etc.....just because I didnt complete the paperwork properly......

I doubt that's necessary. You take your copy down and drop it in to the RTA as you are required to do - except you do your slip immediately.

I don't see why your couldn't time stamp your copy of the sales receipt and have him initial it.

    From the RTA web site....

    When you sell a vehicle

When you sell or dispose of a vehicle, you need to notify the RTA of the change promptly, so that any fines or infringements incurred by the new operator are not referred back to you. If you have an E-Tag you should also update your number plate details with your tag provider.
You need to complete a Notice of Disposal form.

    Do it online
If the buyer is a NSW resident with a NSW driver licence, you can complete your Notice of Disposal online through myRTA.

Otherwise, complete the Notice of Disposal on the back of the vehicle's Certificate of Registration and take it to a motor registry. You can also download a Notice of Disposal from the registration forms link, below.

Probably a little over the top however when ever I have bought or sold a vehicle privately (have never bought a car through a dealer) have taken a photo of the new owner / seller with the car and number plate clearly visible. If they are not prepared to do this walk away as what have they to hide? Also take a copy of their drivers licence for ID purposes.

BANK CHEQUE: There are many forged bank cheques around and the bank does not pay where you present a forgery. So make sure the funds clear before releasing the vehicle.

It is better that you have them do a transfer cash into your account from their bank account. Once that is in it is clear funds and cannot disapear. There is also a paper trail in the event there is a dispute in the future.

As it happens I have just read a news item about a woman who lost her licence ten years after selling her car as a result of multiple red light and speeding offences. Her licence was renewed when the judge found the car involved was not the one she had owned (probably stolen plates), but was lost almost immediately for further offences. It took political intervention to rescue her and get her licence and points back. She claimed she did submit the disposal form and that the RTA lost it. My experience with them would confirm this as being very likely - they got the seating number wrong on my County when I moved from Victoria to NSW, and refused to correct it until I got my local member involved. Then they even paid the invoice I sent them for two unnecessary trips to town, for time and mileage! They still refuse to accept that my 2a is a ute not a table top - according to them Landrover did not make a ute in 1970!
