I saw an advert somewhere for a kit that put the unit up near the gear lever on some sort of console, getting it out from under the seat.

The standard wiring looms are actually long enough to mount behind the seats if you like. Dont need to extend the loom atall:

Why not block all the holes bar one and run a breather up high like we have for diffs, gearboxes etc

Not a difficult mod, but one extra thing you don't have to mod/worry about on a low-tech diesel.

Then there is oil in the loom...

A low tech diesel will keep going as long as the snorkel head is above water...

What about on all the newer rovers with BCMs and other computers??? How many bits of electronics do you need to seal/relocate???

It is dissapointing that a vehicle that would be expected to go through water like a Defender does not have provisions for the ECU to keep working even if water gets in the cab. I can understand that a Disco or Rangie with carpets and better seals on the doors is not expected to have water sloshing around the foot well but a Defender! Could do better if they want to keep the reputation of a go anywhere vehicle.

I think it is a bit unfair to expect a vehicle to be able to go through deep water (how do we define deep? I would say up to the bonnet is DEEP) even if it is a 4x4 unless it has been designed for that purpose. Remember that LR specifically specify a maximum depth which (I think) is only around 600mm?
So if you go deeper than that without doing some mods - what do you expect?
