Yes, but there is an awful lot of drive and energy in WA. I grew up there and I visit regularly and I am always impressed by the progress and achievements that are happening in the place. I reckon WA is the California of Australia, the west coast region that is a bit of a late starter but has the resources and energy to become the great driving force behind the nation.

Going to WA will give you the benefit of the great Nullarbor drive. I have done this with the family often, and we have always really enjoyed the experience. We usually take 6 days for the Melbourne - Perth trip. That's about 700 km per day. Gives time to stop and look and appreciate the beauty that's there.

It has to be said though that some find the Nullarbor trip boring. It depends on whether you can 'see' the beauty that's there. We can and for us its a great trip.

As others have pointed out, once you're in WA there is so much to see and do. One place we have always enjoyed is Esperance. A great town in a gorgeous setting!

WA is definitely worth it!

Last week I drove from 35k's south of Perth to 35k's north of Perth in 30mins,Try doing that in any other city.Perth is the only city I would live in,without doubt the best laid out one in Australia. Pat

I lived in WA/Perth for a few years.....even got married in WA ( divorced in QLD:angel:). Honeymooned at Yallingup, worked for BankWest (hmmm who also made me redundant)...lived in Claremont when we first got there then moved to 5 acres at Carmel.....only 30mins from the city...which for locals was out whoop whoop. Coming from Sydney though it was fantastic to be that close to the city yet in beautiful surroundings. Bottom line....if I didnt live in QLD....I'd live in WA,

Having lived in both, they're very similar lifestyle wise - only difference is that everything costs more in Perth. IME the cost of living in Perth exceeds that of Sydney. Food is dear, accommodation is dearer and beer is even dearer! Salaries are generally reflective of that tho.

That said, my overall experience in Perth has been very positive. The weather is generally milder, Perth beaches are some of the best in Australia, and the transport system is very good.

hahaha... Adelaide's pretty bad too. That's not meant as an insult to anyone by the way, just an observation from personal experience. I'm stereotyping here, but typical Adelaide drivers like their space (i.e several car lengths) between vehicles, and can be very 'protective' when you try to change lanes. The ****ers will speed up not to let you in!!! As a result, the standard practice of changing lanes in Adelaide is: check your rear view mirror, check your blinspot, start turning and... indicate! lol... That's how I drive! :wasntme:

In Sydney by comparison, you indicate and wait for oncoming traffic to let you in, which generally happens stright away.

I haven't noticed much 'road hogging' in Perth, but there's definately a lot of cowboys, especially south of Fremantle. You shouldn't have too many issues driving a county tho.

As everyone else has said, there's a lot of natural beauty in WA, you just have to be prepared to drive there. Margaret river (~3.5 hours away) is considered one of the closer weekend getaway destinations! :eek: And most of the really nice spots are north of a day's drive away. Adelaide's equivalent of "lets go to NSW"! :p

If you do move here, I'm sure you'll enjoy it... just make sure you re-negotiate your salary before making the move!

I lived in Perth for a while, all great as has been said.

BUT... do you have family is SA?

The only problem I found was that I was a long way from everyone.

But if there is nothing to tie you to SA then I would say, go for it and make a new life for yourself.

I'm another one originally from SA and have lived in every state & territory except for Qld & ACT. While we do return to SA reasonably regularly for family reasons (wife is there at the moment) - I'd never go back there to live. I think my next move will be my last one - to Tassie. WA has proven to be a great place to bring up kids (well, country WA anyway - we've never lived in Perth). Plenty of work & plenty to do.

I haven't had the problems with getting interstate vehicles registered over here that others have reported - but I've never tried to get one passed in the city either - the country seems to be a lot more "relaxed".

Housing cost is very different (higher in WA). Wife is currently in the process of selling her father's house at Christies / Port Noarlunga pretty close to shopping centres and the beach - I was very surprised to hear what it has been valued at. A similar property in Perth would sell for somewhere around double the going rate in Adelaide at the moment. Even my place in Kalgoorlie would sell for a lot more, and it's a much older house, though larger, but on about the same size block, both with large sheds.

WA is well known for a shortage of Landrover dealers / service providers outside of the metro area - but we get by.

Plenty of great places to go to on weekends / holidays, even from Kalgoorlie. The coastline is very different from most of that in SA - and the North West is simply beyond comparison if you get the chance to spend some time up that way.
