Possible toxicity issue with bituplus modified membrane (used for sound-dampening)
As part of my sound-dampening procedures for my Defender 110 CSW, I’ve been considering the use of Bituplus Modified Waterproofing membrane to reduce vibration in the floors, side panels and roof.
Of course, bitumen (asphalt) contains carcinogens. While there is most danger to (e.g.) roofing workers, Bituplus membrane on the floor of a vehicle would be subject to some (perhaps considerable) temperature change, as would parts of the vehicle exposed to constant, strong sunlight.
we spend many hours in the vehicle, including sleeping. The presence of potentially toxic fumes does appear to be an issue.
Any thoughts on this from layman or expert?

What is "normal use", as you stated there are many and various environmental conditions inside your vehicle, high temperatures may be a trigger to release certain toxic compounds, I know that there are VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds) and PAH's (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons) in these products (Bitumen) which are highly toxic and carcinogenic. I would make further enquiries, try the National Pollution Index (NPI) they should have some info you can rely on, Regards Frank.

Certainly doesn't sound good. The most suitable materials for this purpose are mass loaded vinyls (usually barium). Its a very common building material and is generally not hazardous (unless you burn it at ~1500*C, in which case barium is the least of your worries).
It's not cheap, but its the best stuff around.
