As JD says, there were inspectors who were in it for the money, others who tried to generate work by finding non-existent faults, others who were total nit-pickers, and ones who were reasonable.

If there is to be government enforcement of vehicle fitness standrads, I think the system they used in Qld. for a time would work better. Set up a random inspection station on a section of busy road in a place where drivers can not see the setup on approach and can not turn away. Police and transport inspectors in attendance, licences, registration, sobriety, and vehicle fitness all done in one stop. Fines issued, recalcitrant fine and warrant evaders arrested, defect notices issued and really bad vehicles impounded on the spot & not to be driven away.

That maybe the case, but it anythings better than nothing.... I do see what some of you are thinking about getting ripped off at bogus inspection stations, that iam sure still goes on in the uk, theres good and bad ones, plus if they allowed the garage who does your servicing to carry out inspections too, then i cant see that being a bad thing. I sure MR Automotive would be fair????

works in NZ older cars get tested every 6 mouths for brakes, tires, rust, etc
see link Warrant of fitness inspections

I think the government is worried about, is half of the cars over 10 years would be put off the road and cause a political storm.
