84 2 door V8 manual. Trick that up with the goodies or leave it stock, its very classic and understated.
96-98 tdi Disco Basic enough to get job done, refined enough to do it well and comfortably.
After 9 of the buggers this is my conclusion.
Don't know about the best, as it's a purely subjective choice, because many would never have heard of Land Rovers before the current models.
But, the prettiest Land Rover ever made, in my humble opinion, would have to be a S11/early S11A SWB Truck Cab in Deep Bronze Green with White (Limestone?) roof.
BTW, I love my Td5 Defender and my Series 1's and my ex mil 11A, and still have a soft spot for our old Stage 1 V8. Got to love the sound of that motor burbling through the water during creek crossings.

Range Rover CSK
The original 2-door bodystyle, all the mod-cons, nice burbly V8....
My Disco 300Tdi gave me 11 years of pleasure with a little pain...a great idea well executed.
Do I miss her?
Time moves on and I am optimistic that my current drive I will look back on with fond memories.
Any way I get to see the old girl occasionally.

Ex 300Tdi Disco:
D2 cause it made Ford realise that they had to pull no punches in the build quality stakes - the result a brilliant D3 + RR and LR stays afloat.
To date, D3.
Best value for money, at present, P38.

I've owned a few over the years from a '62 to a chipped '02 and have enjoyed each one
But my favourite one, one that I could get up at 3am and enjoy driving with a smile on my facewould have to be my current one........'85 County - Isuzu

Too hard to pick one.
but if i have to:
Series 2a 88"
Allrounder the D1 by far,for work Tdi Defender. The classic RR would be up there but it can't match the D1 Tdi for performance and economy. Pat
For a family tourer, I'd have to say the last of the 4 speed isuzu countys without ac. Strongest gearbox, strongest engine, strongest cvs, lift up classic door handles (that landrover still use on the back door of the current model). heck, you can start them and drive them without a battery. The coil suspension is still used on the current model, as it cannot be improved.
As a work truck, i would have to say perenti 6x6 army spec - the wide cab one.
for somthing your wife to drive to the shops, and a bit of outback touring, a disco is fine but space is limited.
