    Hi Dave, mate!
I'd like to give you a hand, but I am too far away right now (thankfully I have to add). As said, it depends on the purpose of the fence, the ground, the posts, the wire... Not wanting to sound scientific, because it really is rather straightforward. But can be a hell of a lot of work. You can set up an electric fence with stick poles in almost no time at all (if the ground isn't like concrete) but I recall when we (me still living at my parental home) were to fence in the paddock for the horses and had to dig deep holes for the poles (that back then looked like columns to me...). But you will enjoy doing the work, at least you will be outsid eand breath fresh air!

Cheers and best regards to SE QLD!

    Hi there

There is all different types of fencing and it all depends on what you want to keep in or out.

We have horses - so theres no barb wire, wooden creasote (<spelling?) posts 10m apart with iron dropper in the center and two plastic spacers.

    We run 2.5mm tye-easy wire - with 7 strands.........

But with cattle - I would use barb wire.

Well that my two bobs worth...

It may frighten some volunteer help off too.

hey I would come and help you fence in a heart beat if I lived up that way. every little helps.

Say it in miles then the numbers will be less and perhaps not frighten off prospective helpers

C'mon, you've got a nice new car, it'd be a pleasant weekend jaunt for you.
Have you ever done any fencing? Used to be hard work with crowbar and shovel!

is just to mark the boundry to start with but want to put a couple of sheep or something on it down the track to help keep the place tidy so want to start it off in the right way.

surprisingly little info about it on the net, i thought there would be bucket loads...

See if you organize some light gauge railway rail from a scrap merchant for the posts, it's a bitch to transport and even worse to setup but lasts a lot longer than star pickets, and dishonest folk tend not to nick them to quickly. A few properties I have seen use galved pipe for posts (if bought in bulk cheaper than galved star pickets)

No I haven't done heaps but I have laid posts with a post rammer (manual) and strung wire across them and tightened them using tensioner wheels and the bike handle bars as we used to call them.

then my boss brought back one of these fencing gadgets from Oz to the uk from his shed (he had fun getting that through customs) don't ask me what it was called but it had hooks and chains on it and it was awesome for tensioning wire. however at the same time dangerous, you could get it a little too tight and off she went.

oh and if it helps we had 4 strands to keep in horses....(so to prove I can add something constructive to this thread )
