    My baby is sick

    My Volvo Grader is ill.
She has been loosing coolant for some time.
    They replaced the radiator cap,SAME.
Just had a service done, crack in header tank, replaced,SAME.
The return feed from the head to the header tank is flowing aerated coolant.
The header tank fills to completely full whilst running then drains back to below the low level on shut down, coolant returns on startup.
I think we have an exhaust gas in the coolant issue
No complaints about the dealer,CJD.They are great to deal with, still under warranty,2700hrs done. They are sending a mechanic back down in the morning to investigate.
WE HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES WITH OTHER EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS DOING ANY WORK,NEXT WEEK OR THE WEEK AFTER IF POSSIBLE!!!

If it is not overheating, there could be a leak on the inlet side of the water pump, sucking air into the system.
The air then gets hot & expands, makes lots of bubbles and blows coolant out the top tank.... Just a thought.

i'd say its not that considering the coolant returns to the header tank as if by magic when you start it up in the morning.....

andy, any idea what boost pressure the graders motor runs?

i'm guessing there may be a small issue with porosity in a cylinder head, boost pressure forces a certain amount of coolant outbefore pressure possibly equalises between inlet charge pressure and coolant pressure, header tank fills up, then before the engine cools down when the engine is shut down and theres no boost, the air pocket in the water jacket slowly leaks back into the inlet tract, with either the pressure dropping off so the coolant isnt forced into the inlet tract, or not all the air is forced back out......

    just a random thought tho.....

    Hi Guys
She is off to the big smoke in the morning.
The amount of air bubbles being fed back into the expansion tank and the sudden drop of coolant on shut down are the biggest clues.
We did many "sniffer"tests wich it passed, pressure test,it did fall but over a prolonged period.
The techie got back to the office.Get it hot and re-test the CO2 Sniffer. If it still passes try and get it hotter.
Being a euro4 motor the CO emmisions are very low and hard to detect.
Next hot test still ok.Did a 30min drive with big hills, definate colour change, confirmation of our thoughts
Thanks to extended warranties she is still covered
Once again, cant speak harsh words against CJD,got to be the best heavy machinery service suppliers in the state. We get them to service our CAT
Im going up with the Grader tommorow,Boss is away, see if I can trick them into lending us another grader as a replacement We are buying a new grader next year!!!!
