Did you know that at least in NSW the rules for merging or ending lanes changed in 2008?
Where once the vehicle that had any part of the vehicle ahead of the vehicle in the adjacent lane had the right of way, irrespective of any lane or road markings. Now since 2008, if the road markings have a dotted line that goes between the lane marking and the edge of the road then the driver who has to cross the dotted lines has to give way to
any vehicles in the other lane. (See Rule 148:
NSW Legislation )
So if you are driving a B double in the slow lane and your prime mover comes up to one of those dotted lines ending your lane and you have to merge, you are now required to slow down or stop to give way to any car in the fast lane. This even means the tiny runabout who is adjacent the rear of your second trailer now has right of way.
