They only have 430Nm of torque which is quite pathetic for a 4.5L, although Toyota says it's class leading. The Pajero has 441Nm from its 3.2L but you'd think they'd tow comparably. I'm not sure why the difference even the power is about the same.
Does anyone know if the 4.5L Turbo diesel V8 in the 76, 78 and 79 series Land Cruiser is any good? I am just asking out of interest because when flicking through the latest Overlander 4WD magazine I was surprised to read that the Land Cruiser with the 4.5L TDV8 is “gutless” and “disappointing” when towing a 2 tonne caravan, a job that it was supposed to excel at. They mentioned in the same article that a NT Pajero with a much smaller diesel (3.2L) towed the same caravan “much quicker, quieter and easier”. I’ve also heard of many of the Toyota V8 TD V8's going bang very early in their life. Oh what a feeling!
Cheers!

Not, sure how well they go with a big load, but the utes go like a bat out of hell when empty. A mate of mine just bought a ute and I was rather impressed by the power. But it is a Toyota, so its still crap

The reason they sell is sales hype. They do have good power but for eight cylinders and 4.5 ltres they should do alot better. The engines are good but it's the gearbox's that fail, there marginal with the TD6 but the eight wrecks them. They do nothing for me at all,IMHO people are fools for paying $70+ grand for a vehicle that's just a modern series 111. I gave one a flog, they really dont have a lot of power and the build quality is very poor. I think toyota is wanting to follow the big boys (think the RR TDV8) and now realise its not that easy being a leader of new technology - although they hardly broke ground with this vehicle.
My bro-in-law has a 70 series trayback v8 - he's chipped the engine to put out 600.
Goes and tows like the clappers.
i am the klappers

what does he get at the wheels though.....it all well and good getting that out of an engine but it depends if the gearbox can help deliver it surely I thought most gearbox's where the bottle neck to power..
I thought discowhite had 500 from his chipped TD5, I think it was the gearbox that was the weakest link not being able to get the most out the motor.
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
A cruiser with 600 pony's would be undriveable, they wag their tail on ruts as standard,I'd like to see the dyno figures to proove it too, anyone can make big claims and as I mentioned above the box's can't handle the standard engines power not to meantion the rest of the drivetrain. Pat
