Nice work!!! I have bought through Monica before, she was open to very limited haggling, but never knew she would play tyre tennis on pricing...... hahaha. The franchised dealer in Morwell on centre road is a family friend, should have just saved my own confusion and rang him....... forgot about him but lol.

Centre road? or alexanders road? the one near BP blatantly refused to sell me a set of tyres and I send (used) a fair bit of business his way

Reckons I'm to much of a pain, I said if your the cheapest, I'll buy them, simple really

So, if you wanted them for a pure off-road track car, they wouldn't sell them to you?

You don't have to tell them they are for a road-registered car.

Just take in the rims and do not tell them what car they will be going on and if you really must, tell them they are for an off road comp truck. This should end their liability for fitting and it will be back on you if anything does eventuate.

I think they'll find that they're not allowed to not sell it to you. If it's for sale to the public, it's for sale to the public

Send the manufactuer/distributor/importer a note that you got a knock back whilst waiving cash about.

Yeah it's good that they let you know the tyres may not be legal for on road use, but how about you get to make the decision.

I'd say thanks very much but I'm a grown up, see you later.....

A retailer surely has the right to refuse for many grounds.

i have in my bar and had in my restaurants as well.

My mate owns a Audio visual shop here in SA and has many people come in that just window shop, want to talk about HI-FI gear and tell him how crap his shop is and how wonderful their own gear is.
Too many tyre kickers. There are many incidents when he simply refuses to sell stuff to people where the sale is just too hard.
Seen it with my own eyes, some people are just never happy and life to him just should not be that hard.

With Tyres, I make a couple of calls and go to the one that has stock, willing to fit while I wait and sounds professional on the phone.
I try not to babble too much bull____ and lock it in.
Price sure plays a role but at the end of the day, servise esspecially after sales service and ability to do a proper wheel alignment is paramount in my books.

So, may I suggest you go for service and price rather than just price.
By the time one makes all the phone calls and driving around, the guy next door might just be around the corner.

As far as tyres go, I am very happy with Coopers ATR's 245/75/16.
    They also fully comply.

sensible hat on here but,,, legally in nsw by my reading you can go 15mm over original diameter from stock for insurance and rego purposes.
if you just took the rims in and asked to change over to the new tyres would think no issue but puts onus on you to be covered for insurance, etc once fitted to the d1.
if you drive in with the d1 and ask them to change them over by rights the tyre dealer should cross check the tyre placard on the vehicle to check within the state regs as mentioned above, outside of the regs and they cannot sell to you as puts onus back on them for selling something outside of the law.

this is something i am currently considering as would like 245/75 mt on the d2 but will put me over the rules and possible insurance unless the car is engineered for the new tyres, more cost.

interesting topic and one which i follow with interest.

    cheers

I tried to order some maxxis tyres yesterday in a 265/75r16 and a certain tyre franchise in Port Macquarie said it would be illegal for them to sell them to me!!!!!!
I was not impressed to say the least! Is this true? They said because of these new laws coming in, that I would need an engineers cert for them as the rolling diameter is too far over standard for my ol' D1!
I haven't had a chance to ask any other tyre dealers yet but surely someone will sell me the rubber I want? lol
I figured that I could compromise by going with a smaller size lol

    Cheers,

It's not illegal at all for them to sell the tyres to you. The tyres will however make your vehicle technically unroadworthy (which doesn't necessariy mean it is unsafe) unless it is engineer certified and the RTA has processed the certification.

Just drop in the rims and tell them its for an old unregistered farm truck if their price is right - that will also free them from any duty of care as they have not fitted them to your vehicle, only to a set of rims that were destined for an unregistered vehicle.
    Cheers
    Slunnie
