    Opinion sought

    I've been planning (saving) for a while to buy another old MB to work on after blowing my last one up, and for some reason I've completely lost all motivation. Part of it is to do with the fact that I've "overlooked" a few issues on the Disco, which all came into question today when I got a puncture on an all terrain BFG with less than 15,000 km on it. On top of an already crappy day I was told it can't be fixed because the problem is in the sidewall (although the puncture happened in surburban Box Hill) and I'd need to buy a new one.

    So I've decided maybe give up on the MB and make some modifications to my otherwise stock Discovery. I think it's probably wiser to have one well maintained vehicle than two compromised ones and go with where the enthusiasm is at present.

    What do you think?

    If I decide to go ahead with the Disco - the $$ is there and waiting and I'd start tomorrow. Kick it off with a re-rebuild of the swivels, 2" springs, 2" bilsteins, bighorns and roof top tent from my Canvas bloke in Benalla.

    I would say go the disco and when funds permit after some TLC then start saving again for the MB....however you know when you nearly have the money for the MB the disco will break at significant cost

    I know because mine has done this to me twice now...and that expensive camera lens is becoming more and more like a distant dream.
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    I like it how you can laugh at the "distant dream" part. I guess that was the mood today. Bloody everything seems to be two steps forward, one step backward.

    I had a sidewall puncture in Coen and the local tyre/servo/general store guy fixed it and then put a tube in it. Dave (Blknight) was tr5avelling with us and he also noted that sidewall punctures can sometimes be fixed.

    Depending on size perhaps a second opinion might be called for.

    i thought it was illegal to repair a puncture on the sidewall if it was going to be driven on the road......either its illegal or the tyre repairs see it as a big no no amongst all of them I cant remember now

    A good running W126 560 SE/ SEL can be had for low$ now. Full on luxury and good performance The parts for these are actually not too exxy, except where engine and trans rebuilds come in to it, I would be happy with one of these.

    The D1 however being a daily use vehicle by the sound of it needs to be reliable etc. I'd concentrate on that and look around for the MB aswell...

    I don't think this is illegal, just that the tyre repairers cannot get insurance to cover them if they do - it is against "industry standards", which of course are set up the people who sell tyres. I think there was a long discussion on it about a year ago.

    Transport Queensland say sidewall repairs are a no-no. Repairs are permitted in the tread area by vulcanising a mushroom plug from the inside. Pushing one of those sticky plugs in from the outside is regarded as a temporary measure to be properly repaired at the first available place.

    Two local tyre services refused to repair or fit a tube to a tyre that they said was worn unevenly and not suitable for use. Worn unevenly maybe, but not yet down to the wear indicators anywhere. I bought a tube elsewhere, did it myself, and used the tyre for another 15,0000k's.
