New GPS laws for Vic ( plus u turn )

    From the Australian newspaper :

DRIVERS using mobile phones and GPS devices on their laps will fined under new Victorian laws.
From November all hand-held mobile phones and navigation devices must be fitted in a car holder or cradle.
Drivers who flout the laws will risk $234 fines, plus three demerit points for mobile phone offences.
Roads Minister Tim Pallas said the new laws were needed to catch up with advances in technology and driver behaviour.
"Talking on a hand-held mobile phone while driving is reckless and increases the risk of a crash fourfold,'' he said.
"The advice is simple - hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.''
From November, motorcyclists will be banned from carrying pillion passengers aged under eight.
It will also be illegal to overtake or carry out U-turns across single unbroken dividing lines.
In the four years to 2008, U-turns accounted for 19 deaths and more than 600 serious accidents, Mr Pallas said.
The new road safety laws bring Victoria into line with national standards.

Laws are good as long they can enforce them, otherways people do not respect them or the authorities

I don't understand new rules????, I sure when I did my license test 32 years ago it was not allowed then, nor was overtaking on double lines, parking on the opposite side of the road, stopping and parking next to double lines.
I suppose it was illegal because POLICE actually policed it, remember the TOG ( traffic operations group) bikes and cars marked and unmarked used to patrol and enforce. Now they have disappeared and motorist are left to govern themselves. Road side roadworthy checks, cars pulled over for having unroadworthy tyres, broken lights. I've seem many a Divisional van drive past the offenders and look the other way. Too much a hassel for them they have other more important crimes to attend to. That is except when your house is being burgled whilst your home and you call them, then they turn up hours later or the next day.(yes it happened to my elderly mum)
I don't want a police state, just would like safer road users and zero tollerance to violence in our society.

So...when we are on the move, I throw my phone onto the console so my wife or kids can answer it. No cradle or holder required.

The cop at the breath test station notices the phone and fines me on the presumption that I may use the phone because it is not in a cradle.

    Has the world gone mad

It is Single lines suggested above.

It will also be illegal to overtake or carry out U-turns across single unbroken dividing lines.
I'm with you.... those things were illegal over DOUBLE white lines when I did my test...

So I guess its cheaper to change the law than to paint the second line.
