The Commer engine was not renowned for its performance or its reliability. I think Junkers probably did a better job. Without being too harsh; the British aren't renowned for their excellence in car engine design.

I think you touch on one of the main reasons for not having excellent engine designs - the often bizarre taxation regimes.
