mmm...I own a medium sized business, and am very much thinking of pulling back to a small business.. I made more money, employed less people, had an awfull lot less stress and more free time...which is pretty much the point innit???.

and anyway, if the Dealer charged out $110 per hour and the tech 'only' gets $27.50 and is grumbling about it...leave and start up on their own...just like the dealer once did.

It is the same in every business. The usual chargeout rate is at least 3x salary/wage. I was talking to a (junior) engineering consultant the other day who is charged out at 6.5x salary.

Just did EXACTLY that.Couldnt put up with the staff...they drove me crazy.Good techs were impossible to find,& i was paying a lot more than $27/h,try $30 plus, also vehicles, phones, bonuses, etc.

I walked away from maintenance contracts, some worth well over 150k,plus all the repairs that were extra as well.

I made good money while i did it,but after 18yrs,i decided enough was enough. There were also many risks,WH&S being one of the main ones,i didnt want to lose everything i had.

I dont make the money i used to,but money isn't everything.

In fact the decision to do what i did was one of the hardest decisions i have ever made,& i have been in this industry,A/c & refrig. for over 30 yrs.

I also had to break the news to many good, loyal customers, some we had been working for over 20yrs.

    Things are so much better....
