I had a complete set of Cooper ATR's replaced under warranty (I had to pay pro-rata on the km's already traveled) for a similar fault.
No explanation given but I wasn't keen on Fraser Is. salt water getting in there!

The Simex's fitted on my P38 when I bought it had similar (longer/wider) splits on 3 tyres. They were replaced under warranty with no questions asked - and I didn't even have the receipt from the previous owner.
It does look like an old tyre.
Have a look here: Aged Tyres
As others have said, the tires look old. What does the date stamp say?
See link above. The first 2 digits are the week and the 2nd 2 are the year - e.g. 5207 would be the last week in 2007.
I would be interested to know what the retailler and/or Maxxis say about it as I have bighorns as well.
No chance the tyre(s) have been exposed to a lot of ozone? As this would accelerate the aging process.
Had a look and it looks like 4 of tyres are 0109 (including the split one) and ones is 0209. Im going put the spare on the drivers front and take the split one to the tyre place i bought them from when i get a chance. Im learning towards a manufacturing defect, just by the fact there are several splits all the same distance from the bead. Will see what they say.
Update:
Well i fitted my (brand new) spare for saturdays run out to jelore SF, after stoping to check my pressures and air down i noticed the same side wall splits appearing in the new tyre.
Pics of the spare:

thats got to be either old stock tyres or a manufacturing defect. If any of your rubber turned up on anything but a stores trolly (and even then I'd still have a crack) Id have them XX'd and a new pretty DO NOT USE sticker smack bang in the middle of the drivers vision area of the windshield faster than you could say "Hey Farey what the hell do you think your doing?"
That's awful!!
What have the supplier said?
I will be speaking with the supplier (well known retail tyre chain) tomorow morning.
