Lets hope they have fixed a few things on the new model.
I have mates who are Toyota fans with Prados. Both are looking to replace them with Disco 4s.

So far both have had the expensive air suspenson replaced by Bilstiens so you can actually drive the the things around corners and they do not wallow all over the road (note these are road cars).
One has had 3 air con compressors, has had the dash sent to America for repairs as it cant be done properly here if you want to keep the correct odometer readings,
Both have had the rear doors replaced under warranty then repaired another twice due to the spot welds breaking.
One, the older one with 160,000 kms on it has more rattles and broken trim inside than my nearly 600.000 km old Rangie.

These cars are well maintained with money no object.

Toyota are not the quality they used to be. It just surprises me how they keep getting such good reports in the magazines.

Magazine writers would have returned them before 20,000 kays.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

In my last job, I had three of the 120 series Prado's (all petrol) and before them, one 90 series (diesel).

The 120 petrol is thirsty (even the last one with the six speed box), pretty useless off road (compared to the Disco or even the previous shape / model Prado), quite a nice drive on road (about comparable to the D2 though without the excellent visibility in traffic afforded by the D2's better driving position). Personally - I never did like the look of them, but having driven well over 500,000 km in three of them, cannot question their reliability. Never had to put a spanner to any of them, and they were all still in excellent condition when handed back to the leasing company.

The older 90 series was a far more capable vehicle off road, but a pretty ordinary ride on road (more or less a Hi-lux station wagon type ride). Diesel engine was thirsty and gutless.

The 120 is probably as good as many of its competitors on the road as a general tourer, tow vehicle and soft roader from reliability and comfort persperctives. Off road, it is not a serious player, and fuel wise, at least the petrol is a pretty thirsty beast, saved in the eyes of some only by its standard 180 litre capacity. If you want fast - the 4.0L V6 goes like the clappers.

Would I buy one as my own personal vehicle - not a chance. They are completely lacking in character. The term "white goods" suits them to a tee.
    Cheers .........

Not trying to promote it at all Mark, just saying that's what I drive after having had a 300Tdi Disco, Td5 and 300Tdi Defenders and it suits my needs as a tourer and the fuel consumption is really not bad, although admittedly not as good as a Defender.
It pulls our camper with ease and it's certainly a darn sight quieter!
I did want to buy D3Jons D3 when he was selling it but was then faced with the same problem as with the Td5..... no back up from LRA in the form of dealerships outside the metro areas.
Yes people like Rovercraft will get parts to you quick and no doubt others will as well, but to me that doesn't make up for some decent qualified support from the manufacturer and I won't be buying another of their products until that changes.

At least if you buy one you won't be able to see the outside of it when you are driving it!

........Unless another one goes past...... Damn, there goes that idea

If I could guarantee that I would have the same amount of problems with a brand new Defender that my old man has had with his Prado over the last few years

I would buy one tomorrow morning.

Hi folks, a buddy of mine was told by one of the Toyota head honchos that Toyota would be beefing up the off road credentials and giving the Prado a face lift before killing off the 200 series. Apparently Toyota has learnt through poor sales that it can not keep bringing out new models that have less off road ability then its previous model, change a few minor things and charge heaps for it.

Now that I have seen the pics of the new Prado it looks like ol Toyota has missed the mark again, which makes this Landrover loving "nut" very happy indeed and optimistic for an increase in sales for our beloved marque.

Mate of mine had the current model TD & the clutch didnt last 40k.

If you guys think the Puma had a few engine rattles on cold starts, nearly all the D4D Plado's have got them & many have been fixed many times

There are also whispers the new one may have a 6cyl TD in some models & there's a 3 door in the mix.
