I was very impressed with mine...
I fitted a new 4.6 low comp short motor to my 94 d1 manual. it had a standard cam.
The engine was fitted with with a Finer filter pod, free flowing muffler & extractors & a ecu upgrade to fuel the 4.6 engine..
The d1 had 31 inch tyres & Standard Gearing...
The Disco was very responsive of the mark & the pulling power up hills was impressive..compared to my 03D2a V8 auto... the difference between the to engines IS very noticable....But one is manual the other auto...i dont know how much this affects performance...i suppose as you have asked, you need to drive a d1 or d2 fitted with a 4.6 motor to make up your mine....
    cheers smally

I guess it is a relative thing Smally, I intend to keep the auto in the D2a so if I fit a modded 4.6 then it's seat of the pants feel will be just as effected as the 4.0's was originally.

So that shouldn't be an issue I'm guessing.

    Thank you for providing a real comparision between a D2a V8 and a D1 with a good condition 4.6.
I know the D1's are lighter in weight so there is a potential difference there in performance if your comparing a D1 with a 4.6 to a D2a with a 4.0 but still it sounds very encouraging.
Out of interest did you notice much difference in fuel consumption between the two under normal driving?

    Cheers,
    Terry

    Terry.
The 4.6 under normal driving wasn't any worse than the 3.9 & towing my Trakshak i would say it was slightly better...

Thanks for that Smally your comments are much appreciated. It's good to hear how your 4.6 Disco 1 went compared to your 4.0 D2

I'm surpized there aren't more Disco owners out there with 4.6's fitted or is it a case that maybe I asked these questions in the wrong area on the site?

    Cheers,
    Terry

I think theres a couple of reasons the 4L remains,,
first up,, even the oldest D2's are only ten this year,, so around 200K and most V8's will reach this with very few problems,,
and the second is there isnt that many around compared to the TD5,, around Ten to one I always thought, (and this is backed up by counting at Cooma!)

    Terry,

Not sure where the idea that the 4.6 is not much different from the 4.0 comes from, but it is simply not true. I have a factory new HC 4.6 in my auto D2, and it absolutely transformed the vehicle. I tow a caravan which weighs just over 2.5 tonne loaded, and the difference, especially on hills etc is amazing. If the TRS modified engine is more powerful than the factory RR HSE engine, then the power difference should be even more marked.

One aspect which is not much different is fuel flow. I get the same or marginally better fuel flow in mine than before when it only had the 4.0.

I had my engine professionally installed, and fully overhauled the heads, injectors etc at the same time. All up the bill was around $13k so it wasn't cheap. If I was doing it again I would probably use a TRS motor because they have the top hat liners which the factory ones don't.

I live in Canberra, so if you would like to see the vehicle and discuss it further, feel free to PM me to arrange a get together.

    Cheers,

    Terry
