Chucaro - Interesting to hear about how good POR15 is. I've read the brochures but never bought any. Not cheap, but would be cheaper than galvanising for sure.

well im guessing to galvanize a chassis is about $200-$300 if it is that much im happy.how much to paint? also do you have to sandblast before if so how much?
Perhaps if I was in UK where there are few companies which galvanizing LR chassis for many years i would galvanize it but also paint it as well because the exposed galvanized steel deteriorete with impact of water.Quote:

Also the chassis can be painted with the vehiclke fully assembled which it is considerable cheaper that pull all apart.
I have mentioned POR 15 because we tested the product but there are other very good products used on the marine industry.
Many test are done with the steel sumerged up to 5000 hour in salty water and do not believe that many LR owners are going to live the LR 5000 hour on the sea so this test are more than adecuate
Here is one test of rust converters for reference for those who like to treat affected areas on the vehicle.
Chucaro, unprotected mild steel will not corrode when submerged over a certain depth of seawater, due to the lack of O2. Moisture, rather than copious amounts of H2O, is far more corrosion inducing.
When i was looking into it it was going cost 2-3$ a kg to gal it and thats the weight after dipping, a 110 chassis is probobly 150kg? if not more?? so it was goin to get fairly costly considering transporting it there would require i hired a car float, i would have also had to strip everything out of the chassis wiring wise, every thing that bolts on would have had to be taken off, it would have been very time consuming...Quote:

As for warping issues in your next post, I have galvanised every steel part on 1.5 landies with no issues. For those asking about price, the most I have paid is $1.30/kg - any more and you are paying too much.
I don't doubt that POR15 is fantastic stuff. On a well-designed steel boat you have access to coat both sides properly. A box section landie chassis, by comparison, rusts from the inside out 99.9% of the time. Galvanising will coat the inside much better than you can do with POR15 unless you dipped it. With Gal, if you miss a few small areas, no big deal - whereas with POR15, you will still get rust.
As I said, I am sure POR15 is great stuff, but I know that a galvanised landie chassis will outlast the owner in most cases, so that is good enough for me.

just so everyone is aware i will have the chassis fully stripped either way.if i paint do i have to get it sandblasted
