Must See Places?

We did a trip from NSW to Darwin and back in July, from the top down:
Litchfield Park, well worth a visit in the dry
Douglas hot springs, good campsite and a nice spot.
Katherine Gorge
Edith Falls (didnt get there but was told it was well worthwhile)
Tennant creek Gold Mine Museum/Tour. Dont forget to go noodling in the carpark. Theres a load of ore used as roadbase with visible gold in it:D
Arltunga out of Alice springs, lots to see in Alice and surrounds.
Consider turning off the highway at Marla and doing the Oodnadatta track. easy trip in winter and well worthwhile, plan to stay a night at Coward Springs.
Burra and the Clare Valley in SA

Thats some highlights from our trip up the middle and back, there's plenty more to see, it took us 4 weeks there and back.

We discount it, because it only 'down the road' but we've had some international visitors say that Kangaroo Island in Sth Aust was one of the highlights of their trip :confused:

I haven't been there for 20 years, but it's reputed to be a great place to take the kids and has some fabulous camping & fishing. The only down side is you have to catch a ferry to get there (not that cheap).

This'll be a thread to keep an eye on,,,:D

Its amazing how many "little" places are well worth the time to explore.

The kids will love things like seeing goats/cows etc being milked,, or maybe cheeses/wines being made. Many have mini museums with a great deal of interesting Australian history not widely known. A lot of these type places are family run and thus know how to help keep kids entertained and excitedly happy, which will make it all good for you adults,,:)

I am guessing that there will be a lot of visiting the tourist info centres to find out just what is around in each town.

Even last night, after the helpful people on this thread offered their suggestions, we have put a few more dots on the map. The kids even asked if we can leave sooner! :D

The usual places in the Top End. Drive into Kakadu from Pine Ck, stay a few days in Darwin, visit the wharf area, WW2 oil tunnels, East Pt military museum.
Do Litchfield on the way down, drop into Adelaide Rvr for the war cemetary.
then there is the Douglas hot springs, Edith falls on the way back to Katherine, where the gorge is worth a visit. Stay in the Caravan Park down Victoria Hwy that has easy access to the hot springs there.
Visit Mataranka hot springs, although busy.
Daly Waters is a good place to visit for a break from driving.

Spend a few days in Central Aust, plenty to see here, East and West MacDonnells (sp) King Canyon, Rock, Olgas. Spend a night underground at Coober Pedy (kids will love it).

I've driven the Hwy from Darwin to Adelaide a few times and always found it a good interesting drive. Good road, plenty of fuel stops, interesting places to visit and everyone will give you the Land Rover wave.

I prefer Bitter Springs on the northern side of Mataranka Township - not as crowded and a nice float down the creek.
Also recommend the walk to the top of Edith Falls.

Getting away from major highways, occassionly, will allow you to see more, ie, Undarra Lava tubes are somewhat out of the way, but are a unique and interesting destination, yet would be able to cater to the needs of a caravan traveling family.

Looking locally - must see is Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo. While you are there, consider Old Dubbo Gaol, Wellington Caves.

Same general area, Air Museums at Narromine and Temora. Car museum at Forbes. Forbes also has quite a good local museum.

If anyone interested in astronomy, consider visiting the Siding Spring Anglo-Australian telescope at Coonabarrabran and the radio telescope at Parkes. At Canowindra there is the Age of Fishes Museum and at Bathurst the Australian Mineral and Fossil Museum.
